Hi everyone,
My name is Tiffany. I am currently seeking my Masters in Nursing at the University of Miami. Back in October when Hurricane Matthew struck and devastated Haiti, I was blessed with the opportunity to travel there just a week later and provide medical aid to hundreds of people. Having a volunteer background and a passion to serve others, I knew this would be an experience like no other.
After seeing just a few photos and some news coverage on the hurricane I felt instantly compelled to start raising funds and gathering donations. What I thought was going to be about 15 people reaching out, quickly turned into over 100. All in all, I was able to fund raise just over $4000 and ship over 2000 pounds of goods which were received and distributed directly to those in need.
My biggest obstacle while in Haiti was water... I thought to myself, ' Okay I have the food, I have the tooth-brushes and tooth-paste, etc....but I don't have potable WATER...okay, no big deal they can boil any water to clean it and use it...but that’s not enough... I want more, I want SUSTAINABILITY. This is when I came across water filters that clean up-to 1 million gallons of water and can essentially go anywhere from a water bottle to a bucket to a large tank with water. This could create water miracles, filtering out toxins and harmful substances from water, thus allowing it to be potable. As you can begin to imagine, the importance of clean potable water is essential to living. The level of malnutrition, dehydration, and waterborne diseases in the community of Thomonde, Haiti was heart-wrenching. My goal for this trip, is to provide the community with at least 20 water filters (each $50) and create an education manual with the hopes of creating a sustainable clean water source. I will personally be submerging myself into the communities and educating it’s people on the benefits and importance of clean water.
I have been extremely humbled and touched by everyones efforts to contact me, donate, and help in any way they can.
