Charlie’s Double Elbow Operation and Rehab

Charlie is our 19 week old Black Labrador, who first came to us 10 weeks ago as a tiny little pudding. Charlie is now a huge part of our family and we really couldn’t live without him!
We’re looking for help with our little boys double elbow operation due to elbow dysplasia.

We’ve had Charlie since he was a 9 week old puppy. Charlie loves long walks on the beach and playing as much fetch as he possibly can. He is an extremely intelligent and well behaved little boy and picks everything up so well. Unfortunately he seems to have been born with a defect in both his elbows.
Within a couple of weeks we started to notice that there was something slightly off with his front legs.
At first the vet told us to keep an eye on them as he grew, hoping he might grow out of it. However we quickly we realized that they were always going to be a problem.
As time has went on they just seem to be getting worse and worse. Although he LOVES running and playing, after long durations he becomes lame and begins to limp.
Last week Charlie’s lameness was getting worse and we were referred for a CT scan and it was much worse than we had feared. Charlie would need some rather serious corrective surgery.
To quote our surgeon “Charlie’s case is one of the worst cases I’ve seen in over 20 years”
As you can see from the photos, nothing is as it should be, left unattended this could pose some serious risks later in life
After Charlie’s CT scan the vet has given us 3 options.
. 1. He recommended a double elbow dysplasia which is a little complicated and very expensive starting at £4000 per elbow. With no guarantee it’s going to fix them completely
2. Leave it as it is and hope it works out, however missing the opportunity to do surgery at a later date. (Again no guarantee)
3. With the surgery being so expensive and his inevitable pain when running and walking. Consider euthanasia. .
Obviously option 3 is a no go for us and we’re doing our best to make option 1 a possibility.
Although we do have some insurance, we’re still a long way off. With the scan and surgery it’s already costing over £8700 not including any of his aftercare or vet visits post surgery.
Even with Charlie’s condition, he has never let it dampen his spirits. As We write this post now we find ourselves repeatedly fending off a barrage of kissies from our favorite little boy.

私達の愛犬チャーリーは生後19週目のブラックラブラドールのパピーで、
約10週間前に家族に迎えた私達の宝物です。
彼は生まれつき両腕の形成異常を抱えています。
ビーチで思いっきり遊んだり、ボールを追いかけて遊ぶのが大好きな活発で
とても頭が良く、無駄吠え等全くしない、飼い主の私達でさえ信じられないほど
物覚えが早く賢い、キュートな男の子です。
彼を家族に迎え入れてから数日の内に
前足が外側に広がっている様に見え、
真っ直ぐでない事に気がつきました。
駆け込んだ先のドクターには、
いつかは確実に手術が必要だけれど今は
パピーなので成長するまでもう少し待たないと診断できないと言われました。

お散歩や遊びは普通にしてあげて、と指示を受けましたが
最近ではついにびっこを引く事もでてきたので
お散歩の時は体調を第一に予め時間を決めて、
調子が悪くなる前に引き上げるようにしていました。
今回紹介頂いた専門医で精密なCTを撮って分かったのは、
一般的な形成異常に見られる症状より更に複雑な手術を必要とする状態である、という事でした。
添付のCT画像でお分かり頂けるように
通常一緒のスピードで成長するはずの2本の骨がずれ、
1本の骨は大きくズレてはずれ、外に飛び出しています。
これがチャーリーの腕が両側に大きく飛び出して見える原因で、
もう一方の骨も外れて偏ってしまっている為、
チャーリーの手の先が外側に向いてガニ股のよう見える原因だそうです。
ドクターから提示された選択は3つ。
1つ目が、手術。
チャーリーの場合は
ここ20年で見た中で一番複雑な症例で、全く同じ前例が無い為
手術をしても回復できるか、または現状より悪化したり、将来歩けなくなる可能性もあり
保証は出来ないけれど、
成長段階であるからこそ、手術は可能ですとの事でした。
ボルトや矯正ネジ、骨の切除を伴う数時間に及ぶ手術です。
費用としては、手術費が片腕につき4000ドル、
日本円でおよそ56万円が両腕分で合計約112万円、
CTスキャンやハイドロセラピーなどのリハビリ費は別途費用として発生するという事。
2つ目の選択は、手術をせずに現状のままうまく付き合っていく、というもの。
ですが成犬になって症状が悪化し、やはり手術が必要となっても
今できる手術は成長段階だからこそできるので
後から手術はできない事に加え、
更にリスクを伴う、との事。
3つ目の選択は安楽死。
この治療費を払えない人や、やむを得ない事情により、安楽死を選ぶ飼い主さんもいますので
選択の1つとしてお伝えします、と。
私達は安楽死を想像にもしていなかったので、
選択の1つとしてドクターに提示された事自体がとても衝撃的でショッキングでした。
少しの希望であれ、チャーリーが望むであろう、犬生を全力でサポートする覚悟で手術を決断しました。
手術費が日本円で約112万円、
1度のCTスキャンが約12万(850ポンド)
リハビリ費は術後の回復のスピードにより
詳細は変わりますが、プラスで発生します。
私達はペット保険に加入しておりますが
それを大幅に上回る金額予算ですので
日頃の写真を投稿しているチャーリーの
インスタグラムのフォロワーの方々からの
勧めもあり、
こちらのサイトで募金活動をさせて頂く事にしました。
彼が一日でも早く大好きなビーチで走り回って楽しく遊べるように、
少しの金額であれ、リハビリ費にあてることが出来れば大変光栄です。
