Sarah’s Fight Against Cancer

My name is Nikie Torio, and I'm fundraising for my dear friend and sister, Sarah.

In March of 2022, Sarah started to have symptoms that she wasn't sure about. She went to the doctor, and they initially thought it might be arthritis. They gave her anti-inflammatory medication and steroids, but the symptoms didn't go away.

In June of 2022, Sarah was diagnosed with pneumonia. She was hospitalized for a week. After she was released, she started to see a rheumatologist. The rheumatologist thought it might still be arthritis, but they wanted to run additional tests to be sure.

In December of 2022, Sarah had a biopsy. The results came back a few weeks later, and that’s when we received the devastating news. Sarah was diagnosed with aggressive stage 2 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (cancer of the lymph system). She was immediately placed on medical leave.

Sarah began chemo on January 17, 2023 and had her last session on May 4, 2023. However, the battle is far from over.

Due to her health, she is not allowed to return to work on light duty, and has completely exhausted her sick leave and vacation time. To add to the situation, Sean was laid off of work on May 11, which leaves them in an even harder financial situation.

Sarah already has over $35,000 accumulated in medical bills, and will continue to face a long and expensive battle with cancer with the continuous follow-ups, labs, and scans.
