Dear Family, Friends, and Loving Supporters,
Fernando Rodriguez is a loving husband and father of three. He is a family-oriented man that has worked hard to provide a comfortable life for his family. Fernando is well known and respected throughout Jersey City and his community. Fernando grew up loving and playing sports and used his passion for sports to coach his daughters’ softball team, his son’s baseball team and coached as many as 5 teams in a season. He is always willing to lend a hand and embraces his unyielding desire to help others. Fernando puts a smile on every face he encounters.
Unfortunately Fernando is currently in fight for his life. Fernando’s first bout battling Brain Cancer occurred in 2017. After going through 32 sessions of radiation and 5 months of chemo, by 2018 his tumor was stable. Sadly, 2020 has been a particularly challenging year for him as a new brain tumor was found. During the summer of 2020, Fernando went through 4 months of chemo, but with little success. This new tumor started causing complications to his memory, speech, and balance. In December, Fernando had a craniotomy to remove as much tumor as possible and to remove part the brain that was still causing him seizures. The pathology from the resected tumor was conclusive, and he was officially diagnosed with Stage 4 Glioblastoma (GBM), which is a rare and aggressive brain cancer.
Fernando's tumor is in a particularly stubborn location. The tumor is growing near important regions of his brain that control his vision, movement, and coordination. Soon Fernando will once again start chemotherapy and wear the Optune device in an attempt to slow the progression of this disease. Typically, GBM carries a short life expectancy, although Fernando’s tumor is aggressive, family and friends are praying for a miracle. His prognosis is uncertain, but we want to focus on quality of life and creating lasting memories. After surgery, Fernando has paralysis from the left side of his body. He is bedbound and requires a lot of assistance with normal daily activities. Determined, Fernando has been doing physical therapy to preserve as much function as possible, with the hope of being able to walk and coach baseball again.
Fernando says: "I won't go down without a fight". I believe he will continue to fight and beat this cancer and he will come back to help others just how he has done his entire life.
