Feeding NHS staff at Cardiff & Vale UHB

Free Food & Drink for NHS Staff at University Hospital of Wales

Please help us support our NHS workers.

From March 30th, we have been supplying food to the Heath Hospital UHW.

Working in collaboration with other local food businesses and the Cardiff and Vale Health Charity we are providing free food to the NHS staff that are working across the hospital campus. Involved are Michelin starred chefs, Specialty cafes, Quality focused catering firms and Hotels. We are approaching this from a good food perspective.

With there being a lack of food options now available, and with staff working longer hours, we wanted to ensure that they do not live off processed fast food, or even go hungry. We offer healthy nutritious food to fuel the staff at the hospital. It is our way, as members of the local food and drink industry, to say that we are with our NHS staff during this hour. We want to look after them as they look after us.

The Health Charity distribute the food once we deliver to the Hospital. With their awareness of requirements, they deliver food direct to wards. This is an essential part of the programme as many staff are unable to leave wards once they start.

We began by supplying food to the Heath Hospital (UHW) and have expanded to serve other hospitals in the Health Board.  The food service will continue to adjust and adapt as support increases.

We are also coordinating any donations of food that businesses want to give to the hospital. Access to the hospital campus will become more limited soon so unscheduled food drop-offs may be more difficult. We are asking such businesses/initiatives to get in touch, so we can coordinate together.
Our overall goal is to ensure that the goodwill being shown during this pandemic is done in a structured and efficient manner. We have seen hospitals go without food donations for a number of days, and then have three drop offs on the same day. The more we are able to work together the better the outcomes will be.

To be clear, this is not a Waterloo Tea Café; we will be getting things set-up and started and then act as a hub for people and businesses to get involved.
Our staff are volunteering for this project and we will do all we can to support the hospital but we can’t do it alone and need all the help we can get.

The time is now.

If we serve 250 people a day (1750 meals per week) it costs £5,250 per week

If we serve 500 people a day (3500 meals per week) it costs £10,500 per week

If we serve 1000 people a day (7000 meals per week) it costs £21,000 per week

UPDATED :
We initially set a target £25,000 to begin, and as time has gone on we have realised to fully deliver on what is needed the fundraise needs to be higher. We have therefore increased the amount to £100,000. This is based on an average cost per lunch of £2.50 - £3.00. We began by delivering 100 meals per day, and within the space of a few days this is being ramped up to 800 meals per day. The initiative is likely to be running for 12 weeks, with a cost per week of £16,800 at 800 meals per day.

If we raise more, it will allow us to do more, to feed more.

The donations given will be used to buy ingredients for our chefs and partner businesses so that we can provide meals for our NHS staff during this time of need.

Full Stop accountants will be conducting full audits on the fundraising scheme so that we can deliver reports as updates to all who have kindly donated.

Please help if you can.

Thank you. Diolch.
