Four years ago, I set up the F.U.S.E. (Foundation for Understanding Social Engagement) Preschool in Lexington MA because I truly believed children with social challenges were not being serviced appropriately in public or private early education programs. It was and still is the view that children will gain social skills by just "being included" with other children. Most children with social challenges in the typical preschool either gravitate to the periphery or become behavior problem children because they feel so incompetent and not successful. I believe children with social challenges NEED scaffolded strategies to understand a social interaction with a peer. So we created a preschool based on cognitive behavioral strategies not just one but a wholistic FUSEion focusing on relationships, shared experiences, flexible thinking, social communication, emotional regulation, and mindfulness. We created a preschool that looks and feels like a typical preschool where a snowman craft is made but instead of an individual snowman the whole class is making one group snowman integrating all the children's ideas into one combined idea.
We opened the doors with no money, 8 kids and a whole lot of faith. We stand four years later with many many success stories of children who have lost their diagnosis, integrated without assistance into the public school, and most importantly are happy successful social kids!
We are now ready to move out of our basement setting in a church which has served us well but we need more, our kids deserve more and my teachers want more SPACE! We need a devoted OT therapy room, we need a devoted Speech and Language therapy room, we need bigger and better and brighter classrooms with technology to support our students. We need more classrooms so we can help more children!
We are fortunate to announce Meghan Trefry, an amazing teacher at FUSE, is kicking off our capital campaign for space by running 26.2 miles in the Boston Marathon for FUSE! She runs for her kids, she runs for our school and she runs for the hope that we can expand and help more children.
Please help us make our hopes and wishes come true for the sake of all children with social challenges.
