FAR East Kitchen - Food Against Racism

Donation protected

Help us help Asian/Oriental communities with #StopAsianHate awareness by bringing people closer together through food.  We hope the success of this project will pave the way for more similar hubs opening up in major cities around the world to encourage healthy dialogue regarding racism using food as a tool for bonding.

Food is the language of love in many cultures and extremely prominent in Asian culture. The majority of us don't usually say “I love you” to each other, but instead show our appreciation for one another through food. So much we often asked, “Have you eaten?” “Would you like something to eat?” “Let's go eat?” instead of “Hello, how are you?” when we see each other. At the dining table, conversations usually flow more smoothly too, even when family members don't get along well with each other in daily life.

We will invite experts, leaders from the community, and celebrities when possible to co-facilitate our workshop along with food enthusiasts/chefs/food bloggers to create a fun-filled-informative cooking/eating session.  With consent, some workshops will be recorded for our online forum to carry the discussion further to those who can't get to us physically.

We hope our pilot store will inspire more to open similar hubs for different ethnic communities such as FAR African American Kitchen, FAR Caribbean Kitchen, FAR Mediterranean Kitchen, FAR Indian Kitchen, FAR West Kitchen etc.

We will use your donation for:

-Workshops (online and offline) with facilitation to support the Asian community.
-Marketing and PR

We also welcome corporate sponsorships.  Your support will mean the world to us.

Why does this social enterprise mean so much to Teresa? Being a new mum and like most parents, she doesn't want her daughter growing up facing name-calling from strangers such as “chink” “chinky” or phrases such as “Go back to your own country” throwing at her. These casual remarks often get ignored and considered harmless compare to more serious violent attacks we have seen recently since Covid-19, but it is not. If we're to honestly admit to ourselves it makes us second guess our identity and feel less important in the community/country we live in. Our mental health and our children's children mental health will be affected by the action we choose to take today to stand up and speak up on this issue.

With China becoming more powerful in the international spotlight, things will get worse. More needs to be done to change the narrative and put a positive spin on racism against Asians. We need to be clear that a country's political system does not represent a race and those who share the physical similarities.

Racism as a term has become more pejorative which created divisive connotations and pushback between those with different viewpoints. This has discouraged some people from talking about it or bringing it up for fear of being judged. For too long the Asian community in the west kept silent because of this, it is time for us to take a stand and fight to be heard. We fight, not as a victim but with love, compassion, and understanding. Highlighting our positive contributions to the world. Our delicious cuisine is well perceived, our people too should be acknowledged, as we foster positive change to bridge the gap in racial disparity.

The black community has been and still is very active in trying to get their voice heard on the issue. We Asians have only spoken up now because, since the Covid-19 pandemic, hate crimes against Asians have increased dramatically in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and perhaps some other countries around Europe where the Asian communities there are too small to make it to the world's news. We can not afford to keep our heads down and stay silent anymore.

Will you take action today to change history for our children and our children's children? Please donate and share. Time for us to get united and show the world how to fight against racism with our love for food and our respect for each other.
