As a first-generation college student and single parent, I’ve worked tirelessly to pursue my dream of becoming an educator. That journey hasn’t been easy, but it has brought me to a life-changing opportunity: studying abroad in South Africa.

This program will allow me to experience new teaching styles, classroom environments, and cultural perspectives that I cannot gain from a textbook. I will visit universities and primary schools in Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Cape Town, and volunteer to teach in township schools. These hands-on experiences will help shape the kind of educator I aspire to be: culturally aware, adaptable, and deeply committed to student success.

I will also learn directly from South African scholars and community members who lived through hardship and racism, gaining insight into the country’s history and resilience. Visiting meaningful sites like Nelson Mandela’s home in Soweto and Robben Island, where he was imprisoned, will deepen my understanding of social injustice and the role of education in shaping a better future. The financial cost will help cover food, flights, and possible souvenirs.

Every contribution, no matter the size, brings me one step closer to this transformative experience. This journey is not just about me; it’s about the students I will one day teach and the perspectives I will bring into my future classroom.
