Emergency Surgery for Rio's Leg
On Friday evening our family was playing outside when a neighbor’s dog came outside unleashed and into our yard. Rio was on his leash and ran up to the dog and in the process tangled his foot and crushed 4 metatarsals in his rear leg.
He immediately yelped and wouldn't put any pressure on it. I carried him to a blanket to inspect his injuries and could immediately tell his foot was broken. Oregon Veterinary Clinic is amazing and was able to fit us in immediately. They confirmed he had broken 4 bones in his foot and would need surgery as soon as possible.
Surgery is scheduled for Sunday May 7th at 9 am at Madison Veterinary Specialist in Madison with Dr. John Silbernagel.
Metatarsals are very small bones and hard to repair. Therefore, we have to see an orthopedic surgeon who is skilled in these types of surgeries. The quote we were given for surgery was $2500 (could be less, could be more depending on what they find when they get in there). The appointment last night for an exam, x-rays, and pain medication was $238.90. We went in today for another shot of pain medication to help manage his pain and that was another $9.00. If any money is left over after surgey and follow up appointments, those funds will be donated to the Dane County Human Society.
We plan on applying for CARE credit to pay initially, but we are not guaranteed to be approved, in which case we will have to put in on a credit card. We are a one income family and just like it would for many of you, this will take a huge toll on us financially.
Many of you know how special Rio is to us. He literally is like my first child, I often joke that I might as well have birthed him. Rio has been with us since he was 9 weeks old and he is truly my best friend. I cannot imagine life without him and he has been there for everything. I remember when I had my miscarriage in 2011 and I stayed in bed for days, Rio was always by my side. He laid right next to me and provided so much comfort. So now we need to do what is best for him and get him this surgery as soon as possible.
We truly appreciate any help you can provide and want you to know how much we appreciate you even reading this.
