Elliott's Medical Emergency in Cambodia

Donation protected
This GoFundMe is a personal request to help me pay down the unexpected costs of saving my brother's leg in Cambodia and returning him and his caretaker & girlfriend, back to safety in the US.

Friends, Family and Strangers:

Some of you know Elliott, and if you don't, you might wish you did! He's hilarious, ambitious, artistic, fearless and provocative. He has a radical spectrum of self taught skills and hobbies, he's the life of the party and also, a self proclaimed pirate.  As a brother, he has always been protective & loving, and pushed me to be authentic and awesome at whatever I choose to do. He's the kind of brother any girl without a brother might wish she had. I'd do anything for him.

Elliott suffered a horrible car accident as a teen, and as a result, he has metal throughout his left leg - top to bottom. The x-rays are alarming.
He's been living in Cambodia for the past year, and he recently found himself in a predicament caused by poor choices. He broke is already once broken metal infused leg - again, and lost circulation to his left foot. The Sonja Kill Hospital in Kampot Cambodia performed an emergency fasciotomy to restore circulation, avoiding amputation.

We looked into medi-evac options to Bangkok as recommended (25K), then found that a Thai hospital in Cambodia's big city, Phnom Penh, was the best option. So, 5 1/2 hours later on a bumpy road, he was admitted into the Royale Phnom Penh Hospital.

In order to proceed with his needed treatment:
1) Set broken bone, install external metal fixation
2) Skin graft for the fasciotomy wounds
3) Remove external metal fixation
4) Install internal metal fixation for broken tibia

= RPPH estimated a total 18K with a 10K immediate deposit for which I supplied on my credit card.

Mom and I got on the first flight we could to Cambodia.
When we arrived at the hospital, the cashier followed us into the room with an update on our estimate. We were 1 of 4 procedures in, and they "forgot to include the cost of metal fixation parts" and explained that our original estimate was for only one procedure. Our updated bill to this point was 20K and they would not proceed with further treatment without an additional 10K deposit. Something wasn't right.

We immediately began planning to get Elliott back to the US. My contact at the US Embassy in Phnom Penh advised us to
a) attempt negotiation on a settlement cost (unsuccessful)
and/or
b) leave the hospital against Doctor's order, as long as the hospital did not have collateral (one of our US passports). Thankfully, they did not.

So, we sent Elliott's girlfriend back to Kampot to pack up their lives and bring their bags back to Phnom Penh, and Mom and I rode all over town in a tuk tuk searching for a wheelchair and medication for Elliott.

We arranged a private driver for Saturday morning to transport us to the airport from the hospital. But, when we tried to leave, the hospital detained our driver. They demanded I pay the full balance and threatened to call the police. When asked for the hospital director, they refused contact and threatened to call the police once again.

I negotiated them down to 6K of the 11K "balance". They released our driver and we were on our way.

Elliott is now in San Diego, handling his own medical treatment and costs from here.
