Getting Ellen back on her feet

If you know Ellen, you know her commitment to justice for the Palestinians. A Jewish nurse who worked for Israeli-Palestinian peace since 1972, Ellen served (at the Gaza Hospital) in Sabra and Shatila in 1982 and witnessed the massacres in the camps. She was the only non-Israeli Jew to testify at the Kahan Commission which spearheaded the official Israeli investigation into the massacre. That experience strengthened her dedication and advocacy for those Palestinian refugees in the camps in Lebanon.

Since then, she has worked to support a Lebanese NGO, Beit Atfal Assumoud (BAS) , which helps children have a normal kindergarten experience, provides financial support to the elderly, and helps Palestinian women sell embroidery to support themselves and their families. Every September, she goes back to Beirut to visit the camps and commemorate the anniversary of the massacre.

Ellen needs our help urgently.  As you may know, she had a stroke on December 2 . Her left side was partially paralyzed and may never completely return to normal.  After 10 weeks in rehab, Ellen returned home to her beloved Dartanian (her cat from Lebanon). She continues to work on regaining her strength and balance. She needs many hours of assistance per day.  Rehab for a stroke is a slow and long process . Home assistance costs and living expenses are draining her small income and she is unable to hold on to her part time job.

For those of you who know Ellen, you would know how much still wants to be engaged in the community and how much she still wants to help. The stroke has slowed her but it hasn't changed her essence. Nor can it.  This is one way to thank Ellen for all her work.
