ElleSolaire COVID Response

We are raising £25 000 (stretch goal of £50,000) to install solar systems in health and maternity centres in rural communities in Senegal. Our goal is to equip 25 health centres with solar power that will provide better and safer health care for over 40 000 people.

In one year in Africa, according to the World Health Organisation, COVID could infect up to 44 Million people.
The majority of West Africa’s population is rural and 200 Million live without energy.
Health Centres urgently require energy to effectively care for the sick - for COVID and beyond.
There are things that most of us take for granted. We cannot imagine that a hospital would not have electricity. But in rural Africa, there are health centres with no light for the majority of births that take place at night, no fans to relieve them in the soaring temperatures, no power to charge the medical instruments and the nursing staff carry out much of their work by the light of a torch, mobile or quite simply, in the dark.
The women entrepreneurs of ElleSolaire, who are women from the rural communities themselves and have been trained in solar energy installation, are preparing to bring sustainable energy to enhance the health and quality of life for their community and the environment. Their work is also a source of economic empowerment for these women, improving livelihoods at a time when their precarious subsistence is threatened by economic crisis.
We are raising £25 000 (~$30 000) to install solar systems in health and maternity centres in rural communities in Senegal. Our goal is to equip 25 health centres with solar power that will provide better and safer health care for over 40 000 people.
For every £1 000 (~$1 200) raised, a rural health clinic will be electrified with a solar system that includes seven LED lights, mobile chargers, fan, radio and torch.
No one should have to face COVID in the dark.
Funds will be used to finance:
- solar systems to equip health clinics (lights, radio communications, solar powered fans and mobile phone charging; commissions for women entrepreneurs,
- operational team costs to execute the programme, and
- logistics costs to reach last mile communities.
Our stretch goal of £50,000 will allow us to invest in:
- critical training for our women entrepreneurs,
- mission-critical logistics infrastructure for reaching last-mile communities, and
- secure core team and talent through end-2020 .
Help empower women in Africa to support themselves and their communities.
Help them be stronger in the face of the COVID crisis and beyond.
Every contribution counts.
Every contribution is appreciated.
