Dear friends, we are Alessio and Elisa, a married couple of native Italians. We both are musicians, scholars, and educators, who have been living and working in the USA for several years,  and we started this crowdfunding to ask for your support in funding our application for the American Green Card.


 
OUR STORY:
 
Elisa is a soprano and voice teacher, and I am a classical guitarist and musicologist, and we often perform as Operaperta Duo  (Soprano & Classical Guitar). Currently I am finishing my PhD in Musicology at the University of California (Riverside), and Elisa has just started working at the University of North Texas as Voice Instructor. Our story in the USA started in 2012, when I first moved to New York City to pursue a Master’s in classical guitar performance. In 2014, after two years apart, Elisa finally joined me in USA and we moved to Edinboro, Pennsylvania, where I worked as a part-time instructor of guitar in the local university. Elisa had a dependent Visa (F2) and was not allowed to work. In 2016, we moved to Riverside (CA), where I started my PhD in Musicology (fully funded by the University). I was offered a J1 Visa, and Elisa obtained a J2, which allowed her to apply for a working permit (EAD). However, the working permit is usually granted for two (or one) year at once, and each renewal costs $400, and - most of all- it takes up to three months to arrive. In 2017, Elisa moved back to Edinboro, where she spent one year working as adjunct voice instructor, while I stayed in California. We were again apart. In 2018, Elisa left the position in Pennsylvania, to work at the prestigious University of North Texas, as adjunct voice instructor. Once again, we are going to spend the next year apart. Currently, we have a J1(Alessio) and J2 (Elisa) visa, which will expire on June 2019. At that time, we will be allowed to stay in the USA only if the university can grant me more funds, in forms of a Teaching Assistantship. If that happens, we both would have to apply for a visa extension and get a new visa stamp the first time we exit and re-enter the country. However, even if that happens, Elisa will likely have her working permit discontinued until the visa is renewed, with the risk of having to quit her part-time position at the University of North Texas.
 
 
WHY HELP US: 
 
Over the years, we never stopped sharing our passion for music with as many people as we could. We performed throughout Italy, Australia, and – most of all – the United States, often participating in outreach programs with the schools of the local communities. At the same time, we were teaching and doing research. Unfortunately, the constant stress of obtaining and renewing our visas makes everything very difficult, day after day. It is a huge waste of energies, time, and most of all money! In addition, it makes very difficult – if not impossible – planning anything ahead, forcing us to make temporary and reparatory choices, with the consequence of compromising our future and our career here in the States.
However, despite the obvious financial challenges due to several movings cross-country in the USA, flights to see each other, and the instability of being part-time adjuncts teachers for several years (no insurance, no benefits, two rents, two cars, … ) we still love our jobs more than ever and we would like to keep performing, teaching, and researching in the USA. In this country, which we call our new "home," we have found a great appreciation for our art and our hard work, and we are convinced we can build here our future,sharing our passion and expertise, and inspiring new generations of musicians.


 
THE APPLICATION PROCESS:
 
According to our immigration lawyer, because of my history and experience here in the States,  I would make a very strong case if applying for the “EB-2 National Interest Waiver,” a green card issued to scholars, researchers, educators,  and artists that contribute to the national cultural interest with their work. Only one of us needs to apply, and the spouse would need only to apply for the adjustment of status.
Once we were told that we qualify for a green card, we were over the moon, since we realized we could finally envision a future in America and start planning it without the constant fear related to visa renewal.  
However, the process has an important cost, which we honestly cannot afford. The whole process would cost about 10,000 dollars: 
$7000  -->  Attorney Legal Fees ($1500 due ASAP to start the process)
$700     -->  I-140 EB2 National Interest Waiver Petition fee
$2450  -->  I-485 Adjustment of Status fees    ($1225 each)

Cari amici, siamo Alessio ed Elisa, una coppia sposata di italiani. Siamo entrambi musicisti e insegniamo all’università, e viviamo negli Stati Uniti da diversi anni. Abbiamo iniziato questa raccolta fondi per chiedere il vostro supporto a finanziare la nostra domanda per la Carta Verde americana (il permesso di soggiorno permanente).
 
LA NOSTRA STORIA:

Elisa è un soprano e insegnante di canto, io sono un chitarrista classico e musicologo e spesso ci esibiamo insieme come Operaperta Duo  (soprano & chitarra classica). Al momento io sto finendo il mio dottorato di ricerca (PhD) in musicologia alla University of California Riverside, mentre Elisa ha appena iniziato a lavorare come insegnante di canto alla University of North Texas.
La nostra storia in America è iniziata nel 2012, quando mi sono trasferito a New York per ottenere il Master in chitarra classica. Nel 2014, dopo due anni vissuti in due continenti diversi, Elisa mi ha finalmente raggiunto in America e ci siamo trasferiti a Edinboro, in Pennsylvania, dove io ho lavorato come insegnante di chitarra nel college del paese. Elisa, a causa del suo visto, non era autorizzata a lavorare. Nel 2016 ci siamo trasferiti a Riverside in California, dove ho iniziato il mio dottorato di ricerca in musicologia (completamente finanziato dall’università). Mi è stato offerto un visto J1 (visto per i ricercatori) e di conseguenza Elisa ha ottenuto un visto J2, che le ha finalmente permesso di richiedere un permesso di lavoro. In ogni caso, il permesso di lavoro viene solitamente rilasciato per uno o due anni, e ogni rinnovo costa circa 400 dollari (e soprattutto, ci possono volere fino a tre mesi per ottenerlo!) Nel 2017 Elisa è tornata a Edinboro, dove ha trascorso un anno lavorando come insegnante di canto all’università, mentre io sono rimasto in California. Eravamo nuovamente separati. Nel 2018 Elisa ha lasciato la posizione in Pennsylvania per lavorare alla prestigiosa University of North Texas, come insegnante di canto part-time. Ancora una volta trascorreremo l’anno separati. Attualmente abbiamo un visto J1 (Alessio) e un visto J2 (Elisa) che scadranno a giugno 2019. In quel momento potremo rimanere in America solo se l’università mi garantirà altri fondi sotto forma di borsa di studio da Teaching Assistant (assistente). Se questo accadesse, entrambi dovremmo fare domanda per un’estensione del visto e ottenere un nuovo timbro sul passaporto al successivo ingresso nel paese. In ogni caso, anche cosi fosse, il permesso di lavoro di Elisa si interromperebbe fino all’ottenimento del nuovo visto, ed Elisa rischierebbe di non poter continuare il suo lavoro alla University of North Texas.
 
PERCHÉ AIUTARCI:

Negli anni non abbiamo mai smesso di condividere la nostra passione per la musica con più persone possibili. Ci siamo esibiti in Italia, Australia, Nuova Zelanda e soprattutto negli Stati Uniti, spesso partecipando a concerti di beneficenza e programmi educativi nelle scuole. Allo stesso tempo, abbiamo insegnato e fatto ricerca. Sfortunatamente, il continuo stress di ottenere e rinnovare un visto rende tutto più difficile, giorno dopo giorno. È un costante dispendio di energie, tempo e soprattutto soldi. Per di più rende molto difficile, se non impossibile, pianificare per tempo, costringendoci a prendere decisioni temporanee e riparatrici, con la conseguenza di compromettere il nostro futuro e le nostre carriere qui in America. Nonostante le ovvie difficoltà economiche dovute ai diversi traslochi in America, il costo dei voli per vederci e l’instabilità di essere insegnanti part-time per diversi anni (senza assicurazione sanitaria, senza benefit, due affitti, due macchine, ecc.) amiamo ancora il nostro lavoro più che mai e vorremmo continuare ad esibirci, insegnare e fare ricerca in America. In questo paese, che adesso chiamiamo casa, abbiamo trovato grande apprezzamento per la nostra arte e il nostro duro lavoro, e siamo convinti di poter costruire qui il nostro futuro, condividendo la nostra passione e le nostre competenze e inspirando nuove generazioni di musicisti.
 
LA PROCEDURA:

Secondo il nostro avvocato d’immigrazione, grazie alla mia storia ed esperienza qui in America, sarei un candidato molto forte se facessi domanda per visto EB-2, ossia un permesso di soggiorno permanente che viene rilasciato agli studiosi, ricercatori e artisti che con il loro lavoro contribuiscono all’interesse culturale della nazione. È sufficiente che solo uno di noi faccia domanda per la Green Card, mentre l’altro, in quanto coniuge,  può fare domanda per modificare il proprio status. Quando l’avvocato ci ha dato questa notizia, eravamo felicissimi perché finalmente potevamo sognare un futuro concreto qui in America, e iniziare a programmarlo senza la costante paura del rinnovo del visto. Purtroppo, tutto questo ha un costo che noi da soli francamente non siamo in grado di affrontare.
L’intero procedimento costerebbe circa 10.000 dollari, così suddivisi:
7.000$ --> Spese legali Avvocato (di cui 1.500 subito per poter iniziare la pratica)
700$ -->     Tassa per la domanda di Green Card 
2.450$ ---> Tassa per l’ "aggiustamento di stato" (cambiare il nostro visto in green card  senza dover lasciare il paese, 1.225$ ciascuno)
