This fundraiser has been organized for one of our beloved teachers, Eileen Ortega and her family.
Eileen and her husband, Carlos, contracted COVID and were admitted to the hospital on August 13, 2021. Both are teachers and were not able to begin this year with their students. Carlos recovered within a few weeks and was able to return to work, however, Eileen’s condition worsened requiring her to be intubated to a ventilator and heavily sedated within a couple of weeks of being admitted to the hospital. Later she had to get a tracheostomy to keep her connected to the ventilator. She has battled pneumonia 3 times, along with frequent anxiety attacks when hospital staff attempted to lift the sedation.
Recently she has responded well to the gradual lifting of the sedation. During the Thanksgiving break, she was able to work on sustaining her breathing without being connected to the ventilator. By the end of the week, she was able to be fully taken off the ventilator and was soon awake and able to interact with her husband and children. She still need oxygen through the tracheostomy. Her road to recovery during this last week of November has been miraculous as she is now beginning to communicate and work on standing with the help of hospital staff. Family and friends have rejoiced over this past week to see her progress when weeks back there were times when the doctors made the recommendation to disconnect Eileen and prepare for the worse!
The family now faces a financial burden due to her long stay in the hospital. Eileen’s FMLA has run out and the family of four is now living on one salary. The goal of this fundraiser is to lessen as much of the financial challenge as possible. Any donation is greatly appreciated as we continue to pray for Eileen’s full recovery.
Please pass this on to anybody you feel may be able to help.
