Help My Family Rebuild After E-Bike Fire

On what started as a normal day, my family’s life changed in an instant.

A fire broke out inside our home caused by an e-bike battery that was charging. My 4-year-old son and his mom were upstairs when they saw smoke pouring in. Thinking fast, they shut the bedroom door and went to the window. With the ebike stationed near the front and no safe way out, they had to jump from our second-floor window.

My girlfriend jumped first, and thankfully my brother—who was home at the time—was there to help. He escaped through the front door and tried to get the bike outside, but the battery started exploding, forcing him to get out immediately. Down below, my girlfriend called to our son, begging him to jump. With my brother’s help, they caught him safely.

Our son walked away with only scratches on his back and arm, but my girlfriend was rushed to the hospital. X-rays revealed a compression fracture in her back. She is now recovering.

The fire department was able to put out the flames to prevent the fire from spreading, but smoke, water, and fire destroyed much of what we owned. We lost furniture, clothing, and many personal belongings—and what wasn’t burned was damaged by smoke or water.
