EXPLO at Wellesley College

Hi! I'm Ahlenne Abreu and it is my dream to go to Wellesley College when I graduate high schooI.

EXPLO at Wellesley is a three-week summer program that will challenge me academically and give me an opportunity to experience what it would be like to attend Wellesley College, in Wellesley, Massachusetts. The tuition, however, is more than my family can afford. Like all Wellesley women, I do not give up easily. I am determined to make my dream come true; I am looking for creative ways to pay for my tuition!

Making a donation on my behalf would be an investment. I am determined to go to college, graduate, help others, and make a difference in the world. I am currently in the 8th grade and a high honor roll student (with a 4.0 GPA) at the Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School (WHEELS), a public school in northern Manhattan. I am proud to be a founding member of the WHEELS Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS), where I serve as the president.

I am a member of the WHEELS Performance Ensemble, where I am the saxophone section leader. I am also proud to be a member of the competitive Jazz at Lincoln Center Middle School Jazz Academy where I auditioned and was accepted at the end of my seventh grade year.

I am inspired by and committed to the Wellesley motto, non ministrari sed ministrare (not to be served but to serve). I have fundraised with Change for Change, a WHEELS effort in support of lymphoma research in honor of Ana De los Santos-Tornatore (Wellesley, 1998); offered music lessons to elementary school students; and have led the WHEELS WQXR Instrument Drive.

I am fascinated by all things science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM)-related. Even though I am not sure what I want to be when I "grow up," I am curious about the medical field in general and neurosurgery in particular. I love the idea of helping people! Simultaneously, I am eager to learn more about judicial fields of study; I am passionate about advocating for folks who might not be able to advocate for themselves. My participation in EXPLO at Wellesley would drive me to explore and investigate my passions with other teens around the country and to spend time on a college campus I hope to call home.

I'm under some time constraints: I need to send a deposit of $750 as soon as possible and to pay the balance by May 1, 2014.

If I am unable to raise the total amount, I will happily either donate the funds to Friends of WHEELS, the college and career readiness fundraising arm of my very public school, or return the full amount of your donations, whichever you prefer.

Thank you for your consideration.

With thanks,
