My name is Eric Perez-Salgado, I am a Senior at California State University Northridge. I am majoring in Kinesiology: Exercise Science. The most frequently asked question when I tell someone that I was born in Mexico is “when was the last time you went back to visit?” I have often answered by saying, “it has been two years,” “last summer,” or “I am planning to go back soon.” I have come up with many ways to hide my immigration status over the years. After receiving DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), I now have little fear of telling others about being an undocumented student. Yet I still cannot travel outside the country. I was brought to the United States when I was eleven years old from San Pedro Zictepec near the city of Toluca, Mexico. When I think about my first eleven years of life in Mexico I feel like all those memories are in pause, like a movie that seems to have no ending. All the characters, in this case my family, are still the same way they were then: young and alive. 


     After fifteen years of being away from family, this summer I have been given the opportunity to participate in the California-Mexico Dreamers Study Abroad program. This program will provide 30 dreamers from 18 different colleges and universities around Southern California the opportunity to travel abroad for academic purposes through Advance Parole. This program will give myself and other Dreamer students a tangible opportunity to return to our birthplace and reconnect with all our family members, including some new members. This is the primary reason I want to be able to be part of the program. Also, the program will give all participants the skills to help other undocumented students within our campus and surrounding community. At CSUN, I joined the DREAM (Dreamers, Resources, Empowerment, Advocacy and Mentorship) Center that was created to aid undocumented students in reaching their goal of obtaining a college degree. The DREAM Center has given me the opportunity to meet other undocumented students who are working towards a common goal of obtaining a higher education while helping our community. Upon returning from the program I will be working towards replicating the DREAM Center at my community college and creating a study abroad program that will help other undocumented students visit their hometown.
     As a transfer student from Santa Monica College, I have always struggled with financial hardships and disadvantages that come with being an undocumented student of color from a low-income family. In order to be part of this once in a lifetime opportunity I need your help to make this possible. The funds will help me cover the following costs:

-       Tuition at CSU Long Beach

-       CETLATLIC registration fee

-       Airfare tickets

-       Passport fees

-       Advance Parole application fees

Hopefully next time I am asked when the last time I visited my hometown was, I can proudly tell them of my recent experience and that I plan on going back soon.

Mi nombre es Eric Perez-Salgado, estudio en la Universidad de California Northridge. Estoy en mi ultimo año de estudios en Kinesiologia: Ciencias del ejercisio. Cada vez que le dijo a alguin que naci en Mexico lo primero que me preguntan es “cuando fue la ultima vez que fuiste a Mexico?” Les e contestado diciendo, “Ya tiene dos años,” “El verano pasado,” o “estoy pensando ir muy pronto.” Por mucho tiempo e buscado muchas formas de evitar hablar de mi estado migratiorio. Despues de obtener Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia) tengo menos miedo de decir que soy un estudiante indocumentado. Me trajeron a los Estados Unidos cuando tenía solo once años de San Pedro Zictepec cerca de la ciudad de Toluca, México. Cuando me pongo a pensar en los primeros once años de mi vida en Mexico puedo ver como todas esas memorias estan en detenidas en el pasado como una pelicula que no tiene fin. Todos los personajes, en este caso mi familia, se encuentran igual de jovenes y vivos.


Despues de quince años de no ver a mi familia, este verano me an dado la oportunidad de ser parte del programa California-Mexico Dreamers Study Abroad. Este programa da la oportunidad de estudiar fuera del pais por medio de Advance Parole (permiso de salida) a 30 estudiantes indocumentados de 18 colegios y universidades del condado de Los Angeles. Mas aparte, el programa nos dara la oportunidad de regresar al lugar donde nacimos y de volver a ver a nuestras familias. Esta es la primera rason por la cual quiero participar en este programa. Al mismo tiempo, este progroma nos dara las arramientas adecuadas para poder ayudar a otros estudiantes indocumentados en mi escuela y en mi comunidad. En la Universidad de Northridge, la oficina DREAM Center que fue creada para ayudar a estudiante indocumentados en sus estudios, ayuda financiera, y otros recursos de apoyo. Ser parte de la oficina DREAM center me a dado la oportunidad de conocer a otros estudiantes indocumentados que tienen una misma meta de obtener una educacion y a la misma vez ayudar a su comunidad. Al regresar del programa California-Mexico Study Abroad trabajare con el personal de la oficina DREAM Center para recrear una oficina de ayuda para estudiantes indocumentados en el colegio comunitario y tambien recrear un pograma como en el que participare para que estudiantes puedan volver a su ciudad natal.

Transferirme del colegio de Santa Monica a una Universidad no fue facil ya que siempre he luchado con dificultades financieras y desventajas que ocurren al ser un estudiante indocumentado de color de una familia de bajos ingresos.

Con el fin de ser parte de esta oportunidad que llega una vez en la vida. Necesito de tu ayuda para hacer esto posible. Los fondos ayudarán a cubrir los siguientes costos:
