I received my Bachelor of Arts in Biology from The Johns Hopkins University in 2007 and graduated from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in 2012. My interest in the holistic care of the whole person began as I approached the conclusion of my medical school training. Less than one week after Match Day 2012, my mother was diagnosed with Stage IV triple-negative breast cancer. She was only 43 years-old.
While my mother underwent chemotherapy and a double mastectomy, I completed my Internal Medicine Internship at Drexel College of Medicine . In the summer of 2013, before starting my Diagnostic Radiology Residency at NYU, my mother was diagnosed with a local recurrence, and was scheduled to begin more chemotherapy and radiation that November. What commenced in the fall of 2013 as a quest to prolong my mother’s life gradually evolved into a journey toward self-discovery, self-nurturing, and self-healing.
I left residency in December 2013 and soon began working in Student Affairs at the University of Miami, giving me time to travel home to be with my mother and family. I began learning about alternative, complimentary, and traditional medicine. I explored acupuncture, massage therapy, meditation, and intermittent fasting. I supplemented my medical education with ACE and ACSM certifications in personal training, health coaching, and nutrition.
During this time, my mother's cancer became metastatic, and after several failed cancer therapy trials, she passed in December 2015. I thank God that I have been able to grieve and cope with parental loss. I am grateful that I have been given the opportunity to resume training after a 5-year sabbatical. All roads have gently guided me back to my original passions: mental health and psychiatric care. And I firmly believe that the path to health starts in the mind.
I matched in the General Psychiatry Residency Program at Augusta University/Medical College of Georgia this year beginning in July. However, after all my family has been through, and with a younger brother getting ready for college next year, we are unable to afford my relocation from Miami to Augusta. I am therefore requesting funds to support my move and start a new apartment lease. I appreciate any and all help! Thank you!!!
Sincerely,
