Dorian Powell's Memorial Fund

"God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be. So He put his arms around you and whispered 'Come With Me.'"

Dear Friends and Family of the Powell Family:  I am starting this fundraiser for my best friend, Natalie Brooks Powell. Natalie’s husband, Dorian Powell, passed away after an unfortunate illness.  Fighter is the adjective that comes to mind when I describe Dorian.  In 2014, Dorian was diagnosed with End Stage Renal (Kidney) Disease. Despite the prognosis, Dorian was determined to beat this disease for his family.  He was a loving father, husband and son and his sole purpose was to ensure a normal life for them.

He had good reason. Dorian knew the impact of life without a father.  Dorian’s father, a military veteran, was killed by a drunk driver while on his way home from active duty to attend Dorian’s 11th birthday party.  Dorian fought his kidney disease in a valiant effort to give Natalie and the kids a different outcome.

Upon receiving his diagnosis, Dorian immediately began dialysis treatment and endured the long process to get a kidney transplant. This was his best chance at survival. Unfortunately, this plan did not come to fruition.  Dorian contracted a deadly infection in March from a dialysis treatment.  It was impossible for him to recover. Dorian’s fight ended on Thursday, April 12th.  He will be remembered as a beloved father, husband and friend.

To compound the situation, Dorian was laid off from his job recently; his kidney disease diagnosis made him ineligible for life insurance; and, his health care expenses rose to tens of thousands of dollars. They need our help.  Natalie will continue working as she grieves and cares for the children.

Dorian was Natalie’s soul mate.  He could make her smile or laugh in any situation.  She misses him dearly.  Dorian was her rock and was one of the reasons she is as strong as she is.  He stood 6’3’’, was bigger than life and was a friend to all.  Dorian was a loving son.  He supported the less fortunate and volunteered at local soup kitchens.  His faith was strong.  Most importantly, he loved his children. He was an engaged and doting father.  He was always willing to guide them with homework -- lend a helping hand as their basketball coach -- even sell Girl Scout Cookies -- play video games, and was the most dutiful of chauffeurs.  Dorian and Natalie were raising their children to be kind, caring and respectful people.

It is painful to watch Natalie and the kids as they work to continue this journey without him. With Dorian’s generous and loving spirit in mind, I ask for your help.  The goal of this fund is to reduce the burden of medical and household expenses for the Powell Family.  If you are unable to donate, we appreciate your prayers for Natalie and her family during this time of devastating tragedy. Please surround them with love, strength and compassion.

Natalie is humbled by the outpouring of love and support she has received already.  Although brokenhearted, Natalie thanks you from the bottom of her heart.
