DOOF’s STORY
Our gorgeous rescue dog Doof has come a long way since we got him at the end of February. He came from a pig hunter who kept him locked in a cage for his first 6 months of life and then decided he was of no use to him so he was going to shoot him. In the nick of time a woman intervened and took him to a Council run Dog Shelter in country Victoria. This shelter was like none I'd ever seen before. They had Doof for 4 months but when I first laid eyes on him he was skin and bone, sick looking (we later discovered his had a parasite burden), had chronic diarrhea and was scared of his own shadow. I had taken my Jack Russell, Murray, to the shelter with me and Doof was frightened to interact with him, he just kept running around the walls of the room. Doof wouldn't come near anyone, not even the shelter staff, and had his tail so firmly between his legs that I first thought he didn't have one!

But after a while he finally got the courage to let me near him and what I saw in Doof's slightly crossed eyes was a sweet, beautiful boy that had a special love and joy that he desperately wanted to share. And although he wasn't what I went to the shelter for I just couldn't leave him there, so I gave his "carers" $355 and took him for the long drive home.

My partner and I unfortunately discovered that the shelter didn't do their job as carers very well.  Doofy was extremely frightened of most things, particularly my partner's walking stick, which is probably the result of passed abuse. He didn't know how to play with any kind of toy or other dog, and he would only squat to urinate; probably a result of spending all that time in a cage. Sadder still, he didn't even know his own name - it was Scooby but after being with us for a short time he morphed into such a clown we changed his name to Doof and he picked it up within a few days. That-a-boy!

THE ROAD TO RECOVERY
Actually, Doof picks up most things quickly. Within a short while he began to trust us more and regaining his  health. We discovered he had a parasite burden, which he recovered from and his diarrhea cleared up. He gained 11 kg and has become best mates with Murray, who he plays constantly with and goes on long walks.

DOOF LEG DEFORMITY SET BACK
Doof’s  Angular Limb Deformity (ALD) began to slowly present itself. What was once his front legs looking a little pigeon toed turned into serious inward bends at the ankle. When we first noticed it the vets had us try many things but none of it worked. Now he's a year old his front legs are that bent that he stands with them crossed to keep himself balanced most of the time. He can only take short walks but because he's such a happy goofball of a dog he will run when he gets excited, then his legs will tremble as he stands like a ballerina trying to cope with the pain.

HOW YOUR DONATIONS WILL HELP
Doof is in desperate needs of surgery to correct the ALD in his two front legs or he will experience even greater pain, have difficulty walking and other related issues. He may even lose his life.

But he's come too far to have it stop here!  Such a sweet,  handsome and clever boy deserves a chance at a long, happy pain free life and with your help we can get him the surgery he needs to walk and run properly again.

We would love it if you could donate to Doof’s cause and/or share his story with all you friends, family and social networks.

All donations will go to his surgery and after care. Any extra funds will be donated to and deserving local Go Fund Me campaign.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR CARING!
