Many of you in the Huntsville, AL area know Kate and Donny McElvoy. For many years they have been a staple in our community. They have given countless hours of their time and talents to lend a helping hand for various projects without ever asking for anything in return.
In early April, Donny began experiencing shortness of breath and a lack of energy. And for those of you that know him personally, a lack of energy is very out of character. Donny being Donny, shrugged it off as allergies and just kept going.
Over the next few weeks, his symptons worsened to the point that he could hardly breath. Kate rushed him to the hospital. He was diagnosed with double pneumonia and immediately admitted to ICU.
After several tests, scans, surgery and biopsies, it was determined that the root cause of Donny's pneumonia was Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. This totally blindsided them both. He spent 10 days in the hospital undergoing extensive treatment for the pneumonia and also taking his first of six rounds of chemotherapy.
Donny is home now, 15 lbs lighter, bald but in good spirits. Again, for those of you who know him, "being in good spirits" is second nature. He always greets people with a smile and he has never met a stranger. He always puts others before himself and will stop what he is doing at the drop of a hat to help a friend!
Donny and Kate are very thankful for the wonderful doctors, nurses and staff for their care and guidance through the tough road they are traveling.
Donny received his third chemo treatment this week. His weekly routine of trips to the doctor for lab work, scans and trips to the pharmacy have become the new normal for the McElvoys. This new "normal", coupled with the physical toll on his body from chemo, has made it impossible for him to work right now. And as you can all imagine, the costs for 10 days in the hospital, the subsequent chemo treatments and the medications are astronomical and mounting daily.
As friends and family, we are asking those of you who are willing to help, to donate to a Go Fund Me account to help with medical bills and care. We also ask for your love, thoughts and prayers for Donny and Kate during this difficult time in their lives. Any amount that you can give will help so much. Thanks in advance and may God Bless each of you!
