From May 7th to May 28th, 2014, I will be embarking on a journey in the Northeast Himalayas in India with the University of South Florida School of Social Work.
During my time in India, I will be engaged in community projects with USF's partner organization, RIWATCH (Research Institute of Worlds Ancient Traditions, Cultures and Heritage). There I will learn how they apply a socio-ecological framework (i.e., working at the individual, family, community, and policy levels) across the three pillars of sustainable development (social, economic, environment, and culture) in its work with the women, men, and children from indigenous communities. I will also be immersed in the indigenous community to learn about their culture, lifestyles, traditions, social structures, and health practices.
(This is the RIWATCH campus, where we will be staying).
As a dual degree master's student in social work and public health, I am really excited to have this opportunity! My goal amount is $4,800, which includes program cost, meals, accommodations, and airfaire. I am in the process of applying for scholarships, but they will not cover all costs. Any amount of your contribution would greatly help me achieve my goals of being a well-rounded, global professional. The fields of social work and public health encourage us to be culturally competent, and embarking on this journey would allow to learn the skills I would need to work with indigenous and underserved populations. This program will also help me learn how interdisciplinary professionals work together to help build a healthy community. I cannot wait to explore India!
