Lend a Heart for Peru

Due to the effects of ‘El Niño’, which have been exacerbated by climate change, torrential rains have triggered mudslides ('huaycos') along the coast of Peru from North to South. As of today, 62 souls have lost their lives and over 60,000 are homeless, this number only expected to rise. Even Lima, the capital city, is experiencing a state of emergency. There is a shortage of food and water and the electricity is being rationed. Some companies have taken advantage of the scarcity of supply to increase their prices, making basic goods inaccessible to families who need it the most. Moreover, mosquito-borne diseases such as Zika and Dengue are expected to increase due to stagnant water. The prognostication is for the rains to continue well into April. Therefore, the people of Peru are asking for our help. They need water, non-perishable food, clothing, and mosquito repellent to help those in need. The government of Peru has budgeted 2.5 billion Peruvian Soles (620 Million British Pounds - 770 Million US Dollars) in order to reconstruct the country.

I am a Peruvian, and while I have not spent my whole life there, it is my home. I will be back in Peru next week and was not expecting a disaster created by major flooding. My friends and family have been sending me pictures of rivers of mud and rock flooding through the streets of mountain villages and most recently in and around parts of Lima. The floods are destroying homes, roads and access to clean water. People are rushing to buy food and water emptying the stores. I decided to get a head-start on my plans for some hands on help by creating this page and asking for your hard earned money. As soon as I am in Lima I plan to use these funds to make a difference by getting supplies to those who are suffering. I will upload photographs and videos of how your money has aided the people of Peru and I will make copies of the receipts so you can see how your donations are being used.

This crisis is happening now as you read this statement. Your donation will be saving lives and helping those who lost everything smile again. Help bring hope back to the hearts of Peru, I promise that even the smallest of donations can make a difference.

Peru floods kill 67 and spark criticism of country's climate change preparedness
