Tasha and I met when she was an intern at Pisgah Legal Services and a student at UNC-A. Tasha put herself through college while also helping to financially support her family, being displaced for months by Helene, and working nights at a hotel to make ends meet. She graduated from college in May 2025, got a full-time job, an apartment, and started a paralegal program in the evenings. She's always dreamed of being a lawyer fighting for human rights and she was carving that path.
All that Tasha fought so hard for came crashing down in July 2025 when she had a serious stroke at age 22. After months of treatment, Tasha still cannot use her right hand and foot. She lost her job and her apartment after her stroke. She’s been fighting so hard to recover over the last six months and was very excited to get a new, part-time job that started this week (mid-February). Unfortunately, her very old car has died and can't be fixed. Tasha desperately needs a car to get to her job at 6am and to her many medical appointments. She lives far from a bus line so can't use public transportation. Right now, friends and I are taking Tasha to multiple appointments each week and helping her get to work, but this isn't sustainable.
Tasha has fought so hard for herself and done everything she possibly can to rebuild her life through challenges and crises.
