The worst thing is working in the medical field and not being able to help your own kid, compounded with a child that is already a complete miracle to begin with.
This past Sunday, Dominic started having horrific gastrointestinal symptoms. By Sunday night, he had stopped eating and was super dehydrated with a fever of 103.1. Off to the ER we went at 3AM. He kept having horrible blowouts of just water and mucous. His temp got as high as 104. After all the testing was done, he was found to have Salmonella poisoning and Respiratory Syncytial Virus.
Today, we found out that the Salmonella had moved into his bloodstream, so now he also has a blood infection. We were told the Salmonella can move quickly into the blood, even in 48hrs, and in infants, it can cause sepsis very rapidly.
We are praying the antibiotics start to work quickly and he gets to feeling like himself. Because of the blood infection and his age, we have to stay in the hospital for a 2-week course of IV antibiotics.
There is nothing to do for the RSV other than symptomatic treatment and waiting it out. So far, his breathing is ok.
Meanwhile, David has our daughter at home and everyone else is symptom-free. Hopefully, it stays that way.
We don’t know exactly how he got Salmonella. I think it was his formula, as the symptoms started about 12hrs after using a new batch of formula.
I’ve been in touch with Harris County and because it’s not botulism, they cannot help with testing the formula. I have reached out to a lab that can test it but the cost is unknown at this point. We need to make sure it wasn’t the formula so no other babies get sick.
All of the funds will go to testing the formula, medical bills and costs associated with our stay. We will be here for 2 weeks at a minimum.
Thank you to everyone that has reached out to us and helped. We are struggling, especially since we do not have any family in the area. I cannot put into words my gratitude to anyone who helps in any way. Please help us save my boy. We are devastated and not out of the woods yet.
We are at Memorial Hermann in the Woodlands, and we are so grateful to all of the staff. They have been amazing, from the moment we walked into the door, the staff has been wonderful, caring, and on their game.
