My name is Dr Sulieman Atef, I am a proud Palestinian and medical intern from Gaza. Prior to the hostilities against Gaza, I lived with my wonderful family, in a flat in Khan Younis with my parents and siblings.

Despite the ongoing 18-year siege on Gaza, we had a beautiful home, full of love, laughter and happiness. My father was a farmer, my mother a housewife. I am the third oldest and contributed financially to the running of the household.

Throughout the 8-month hostilities against Gaza, I persevered working long hours in the emergency department of the European Gaza hospital, one of the few remaining, functioning hospitals. I treated and managed many complex trauma’s secondary to the bombings, snipers and drones. I even treated my own family members admitted with severe, life-threatening injuries and children with no surviving relatives. Due, to the collapse of the Gazan infrastructure no salaries were provided to healthcare professionals.

During this time, my family and I were displaced four times, and now all 14 members, parents, siblings, nieces, and nephews live in a small tent in Rafah. They are exposed to the elements, cold and rain, with no electricity, sewage systems, running water or fuel. My five nieces and nephews are all below five, the youngest is six months. I have grave concerns over their current safety and their futures. The outlook is bleak for my family if I am unable to provide for them, food, clothes, medications, baby milk and nappies.

I used my savings to support 14 members of my family and two weeks ago, I was forced to flee from Gaza into Egypt to find a way to continue to support my family and rebuild our lives. I plan to do this by pursuing a career in internal medicine in a European country, with the ultimate goal of becoming a cardiologist. This way I will continue to serve humanity as a doctor and continue to support my family and keep them safe.

I humbly request your assistance and donations to help pay for the medical entry exams in a European country, visa’s, travel expenses but in the meantime continue to support all the members of my family from starvation.
