Derrick Jenkins was born and raised in Mississippi and has worked in Fairfax County most of his adult life. He has worked for Fairfax County Public Schools for over 20 years. Most of that time he has worked with Special Needs students at Lanier Middle School in Fairfax City. He is currently the girls’ varsity head basketball coach at Broad Run High School in Loudoun County. He is a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, educator, coach, mentor, and great friend to many.
Derrick had a severe stroke on the afternoon of December 29th, 2015. He has been in a coma ever since and is currently in the ICU at Fairfax Hospital. Derrick’s wife, Susan Brown (who is also a teacher), and his sisters have been by his side at Fairfax Hospital every day since the stroke.
Derrick was in the middle of a game coaching his Broad Run High School team at the time of the stroke. He was immediately taken to Fairfax Hospital.
Derrick Jenkins has given so much love to his family, his students, his players, his faith, and his friends over the years. Many of his friends, family, and co-workers describe him as the most selfless person they know. He always has a smile on his face. Derrick loves people and loves life (along with loving the Redskins and St. Louis Cardinals!)
We would like to now help Derrick and his family during this time of need with the mounting hospital (and post-hospital bills that are sure to pile up). Let’s all show support in every way we can for Derrick and his family while he fights for his life.
