Delfino Munoz Scholarship 2017
Donation protected
First of all, I want to thank everyone that has made this scholarship possible. I am truly humbled by the response of our community these last two years. The Delfino Muñoz Proyecto Saber Scholarship has awarded over $7000 in financial assistance to eight students to continue their education past high school. We have students at the University of Washington, South Seattle College and Highline Community College. However, more important than this small amount of financial assistance, is the belief our community has in the future potential of these beautiful young people. The scholarship committee, is staying connected to our students through a mentorship program designed to help students with the transition from high school to college. Not only will we do everything to see that these students are successful, but it is the Committee’s sincere hope, that they will bring those skills and role modeling back to our community
The scholarship committee is getting off to a late start this year, but we are still hoping to award at least three $1000 scholarships. All scholarship money is raised through your generous contributions. Even a small amount, like $10 adds up, so please donate what you can. The awards will be announced June 8th at the Senior Awards Night.
Thank you,
Delfino Muñoz
Information about the Scholarship:
Proyecto Saber is a Chicano/Latino advocacy and cultural support program started in the Seattle Schools in 1975. Community activists were determined to decrease the drop out rate and increase the number Chicano/Latino students transitioning into college. A federal grant was written and secured. Delfino Muñoz was one of the first students served by the new program. As a result, he has been an active member of his community for over 40 years. He grew up in the High Point Housing Projects attending Denny Middle School before graduating from Chief Sealth in 1978. While in high school he was a Proyecto Saber student at its inception and an active member of MECHA. His deeper understanding of his own cultural roots propelled him into becoming politically aware and an active member in the Chicano movement of the time. Through his soul searching and education, Delfino’s conviction to better the situation of students like himself brought him back full circle to Chief Sealth High School where he volunteered his time tutoring Proyecto Saber students. He has dedicated his career to the life-long success of his students in reaching a higher education and developing the “ganas” to persevere and giving back to the community. His love of the Proyecto Saber program and sense of accomplishment in helping students of his community have continued to captivate his heart. Delfino has been a devoted staff member for the last 29 years.
To thank him for all his dedication to our children we have started a scholarship to honor his work.
We would appreciate help raising funds for this scholarship.
