Declan's Service Trip to Tanzania
Donation protected
Heyy! My name is Declan Viegas and I am currently a Gr. 12 high school student at St. John Paul II CHS of TCDSB. Education has always been a big part of my life. Growing up in Canada, I have been blessed with the ability to achieve an education through various forms of schooling. It is something that has helped my grow as a person and has shaped who I am today; in fact, education is what has lead me to be apart of this campaign.
I have learned that education is not a luxary but is a basic necessity of life. Unfortunately many children in Third World Countries are deprived of education. Various factors such as the IFI's Structural Adjustment Program, debt, as well as Aids/HIV ravaging the country, have forced African Countries to push education aside. What I have learned is that Education is half the battle. How is Africa ever going to resolve their problems, if there is no one being educated on how to solve the problems?? This needs to change. Everyone is deserving of an education no matter where you come from. This inequality has inspired me to not sit back and watch, but to take action and make a change, and I hope that everyone becomes apart of this change.
I have signed up to embark on a service trip to Arusha, Tanzania for two weeks in August (1st-15th).
Our team, led by teachers in the Toronto Catholic District School Board and members of ME to WE, will spend the vast majority of our time volunteering at local schools, teaching, building classrooms, and helping in concrete ways to improve the local community.
The three things I am most excited for on my trip is:
1. Getting to experience such a different style of life and seeing how it is going to affect me as a human being.
2. Getting to make friends with all of the children I am going to be helping
3. Knowing that what I am accomplishing on my trip will help change the lives of people who deserve so much more than what they have.
I decided to go on this Tanzania service trip because I believe in the importance of education and how it can change people’s lives for the better. It is my dream to help educate those who are in need, in an impactful and positive way. I want to be a part of something bigger than all of us. This trip will also help me grow as a human being and will help strengthen my moral values.
Here is what I’ll be doing on my Trip to Tanzania:
Ø I’ll visit a community that works with ME to WE’s charity partner, an organization with a 21-year history of sustainable development. Together with local community members, I’ll volunteer on a project that helps empower families with the tools to lift themselves from poverty- from a classroom with a clean water system.
Ø I’ll have the chance to see the first stages of sustainable development in communities recently partnered with ME to WE.
Ø The projects I’m contributing to are part of ongoing development work, so my trip will have an impact long after I return home!
Ø I’ll have the opportunity to connect with community members and experience their daily lives and culture firsthand, with activities like learning how to make chai tea with local family, joining a Maasai Warrior to learn about traditional weaponry, and joining a local woman to collect water.
Ø I’ll learn firsthand about social issues including agriculture and food security, and access to education and clean water.
Ø Throughout my trip, I’ll take part in activities to help build my leadership skills. I’ll also work with my trip leaders to build an action plan- a blueprint of how I’ll take the inspiration from my trip and use it to make a difference at home on local and global issues.
The cost of this service trip includes:
- Economy return airfare from Toronto to Tanzania (Mt. Kilimanjaro airport)
- All ground transportation
- All meals and accommodations
- All donations and gratuities
- Any activity fees
- All service charges and taxes
- All building materials ($1000 of the cost of the trip)
- Preparatory learning program
We will also be recieving donations through etransfer or direct donations which will be counted towards the campaign goal. If you aren't able to donate, help Spread the Word!!!!!!!!
In addition to the cost of going on this trip, any additional money raised can help go towards more building materials, food and water for families in the community, and community services/supplies such as books, sports equipment, etc. Also, every member of the team is able to bring along a second suitcase which can be filled with non-perishable foods, toys, sports equipment for the children, toiletries, books, and clothing items.
