Davis Family - LA Flood Recovery
My name is Kim Davis and I live in the wonderful city of Baton Rouge, in a quiet little neighborhood where my husband, Billy, and I have been blessed to grow our family and raise our two children (4yr old boy, and 18 month old girl) surrounded by a wonderful community for the last 2.5 years.
Unfortunately, our memory-filled home fell victim to the devastating flood with 3-feet of water throughout. Thankfully, my family and I, along with our 2 dogs, escaped unharmed just as water began seeping in through our walls. We are appreciative beyond words for the volunteer first-responders and the East Baton Rouge Sheriff Dept. that came to our aid in their high-water trucks. We are presently staying with my parents while we work our way through this mangled reconstruction process. We are so thankful for generosity we've received from family, friends, and even complete strangers.
Like so many in our area, we did not have flood insurance so we will be coming out of pocket on the majority of our home reconstruction project. Our home was not located in a flood zone so we were not required to have flood insurance. Our neighborhood had never flooded or come close to flooding in the 30 years of its existence.. We never imagined in a million years that something like this could happen to us. Today is a month since the flood and it is still a bit surreal to think that 80% of what we owned is gone and that our once beautiful home where our children played is now empty and torn apart… We thought we did everything right… my husband and I are both hard-working individuals. We've both worked since we were 15, we’ve saved our money and lived within our means with the occasional splurge… and then within a matter of a day, so much was washed away, taken by the flood.
My husband and I are not accustomed to asking for help or a handout. Quite the contrary, we’re usually the ones offering a helping hand. But at this point, we can use all the help we can get. It has taken me a month following the flood of our home to create this site to appeal to others for help. After meeting with FEMA and a number of contractors, we’ve come to the sobering realization that our home reconstruction project will be a huge financial undertaking that we simply couldn’t have planned for (between $85,000-$100,000). FEMA's grant will only cover a small fraction of the costs.
If you think you might be able to assist us by donating even $5, please know how much your generosity is appreciated by me and my family in our time of need. And Thank You to those of you who have donated to other flood victims in my community even if you are unable to donate to our campaign. There are so many out there that need help. Thank you for giving what you can. It’s amazing how much humanity we’ve seen come out of such a horrible event.
On behalf of my family, thank you so very much for your kindness and consideration.
