Dans fight with Non Operable cancer
Donation protected
Our brother Danny went to the ER on March 7th with a lot of pain thinking he was passing a kidney stone. After blood work and an ultrasound they admitted him. The next day they performed a CT Scan. We were told he had a large mass (14cm x 13cm) on his right liver lobe and several small lesions on his left liver lobe. The next day they did a biopsy. The biopsy came back positive for liver cancer. Because he did not have medical insurance and at the time did not qualify for Medi-Cal he was released from the hospital and referred to UCLA Harbor. Last Friday, April 3rd we were finally able to see the Oncologist at UCLA Harbor and we were able to get him on Medi-Cal. The Oncologist was very optomistic at first explaining all of his options. She started with medication for Hepitits B, surgery for the tumor, a Chemo pill and a liver transplant. She then took his medical records for review. When she returned our whole world was turned upside down. Because of the size of the tumor surgery was not an option, a liver transplant was not an option and his protien level was too low so the chemo pill was not an option. The Oncologist gave him 6 months to a year and commented on spending this time wisely. We were sent home with heavy hearts and very little hope not to mention reliving the past with the sudden passing of our Mom in 1994 from cancer and the sudden passing of our Dad in 2013 from heart disease.
Since then Danny has continued to be in pain, not being able to take the pain medications perscribed because they make him throw up. We are currently researching other forms of medication and holistic options but this takes money and Medi-Cal does not cover these expenses. He is on permanent disability but the checks haven't started coming in yet. Of course we will continue to keep Danny's spirits up. We will never give up hope and we will fight like hell as a family!
