DANIELLE HAGMANN MEDICAL FUND

Donation protected
I'm Steven Berkowitz, dad to my daughter Danielle (Berkowitz) Hagmann. She's only 30, and she lives nearby  in sultry SW Florida.(The SW part means sweltering weather)

Five kids in the house with spouse Lyndsey. She's holding baby Sarah in the photo above.

They lead an active life with mom, doing all kinds of very cool kid stuff- in soccer, girl scouts, karate art, music and singing lessons, mudding in SUVs and monster trucks, going to Florida theme parks.
Danielle's been to Disney's Magic Kingdom herself about 40 times, one of her favorite places on earth with all those Princesses and where dreams seem to magically come true.
MOF- Our entire family(my wife, my 5 kids and 8 grandkids) WAS scheduled to go to all the Disney parks this year end of May. etc. No trip this year.

Danielle and the kids worry about abused women and kids, moms in shelters, homeless people and many other social issues- politics, gender equality, and more. And they put hands, feet and hearts into what they believe in.
Enlightened kids, and very smart. They paint, on canvas, with oil paints and acrylics, as wewll as experienced adults do.
They even did their own blanket drive for the homeless.
Never a dull moment.

Who could have imagined that that on April 23, not even 12 hours after Danielle and kids had been at the beach nearby riding an ATV, (see photo below) that that very night, at 3 am, Danielle would lose both her legs trying to save another woman, Lauren Richardson, from Ontario, Cal. in the car ahead of her that spun out and t-boned the guardrail?

She checked the woman in the car for injuries (Dani is an LMT and has had first aid training) and moved the woman into Dani's car. The lady was shockey, shaking, and Danie got out of her car to get a blanket out of her SUV's back hatch.
She had been standing in back of her own car, but next to the driver door of the crashed car, and had already called 911. Little did 911 know, OR Danielle know, that she, the Good Samaritan and hero, would become the crash victim with the worst injuries.

THAT'S when the REAL horror began...

A third car came along, driven by Jeremy Alonzo Carter, 37, of St. Petersburg, Fl ., (25 traffic violations including DUIs, Driving While Suspended; he had even been a wanted fugitive from the State of Georgia)on his way back to St. Petersburg after a weekend of partying in Miami,  and, in the dark and rain, on Rte. 75 near Luckett Rd. in Ft. Myers, Fl., and hit the crashed car, pushing it, and Danielle and her own car, into the guardrail, crushing and mangling both her legs.

At the scene, Paramedics had to give her blood. Both her legs were mashed and mangled, and, if she didn't get blood, she'd have died at the scene, the Good Samaritan now the victim of her own caring and compassion.

Just like Dani though....empathy, compassion, caring, always the one there for everyone else, just couldn't settle for just calling 911 and standing by.

Let me tell you just a little about this amazing mom to 5 kids, who still bakes everything from pies, cakes, cookies and candies herself and raises money for abused moms, foster kids, and everybody else, and still makes time to be a Girl Scout Troop leader, chauffer, playmate for those kids and even other folks kids.
She is happily remarried.

Dani has 4 siblings on my side and 7 on her mom's side, and she strangely seems to find/make a way to spend time with each of them every month.

In her SPARE time, she works 50+ hours a week as a private contract massage therapist. No health insurance from the employer, not even have a disability program for employees...

Now Dani's career and job are gone, she needs a power wheelchair, and then, 2 prostetic legs, above the knees.
She'll need every bit of $40,000 just for that. And prostetics are estimated to be good for just 5 years or so.
She's 30, so going to need 8 sets along the way.

We estimate she will need $200k just for her current ICU stay and the subseqent hospital time before they move her to a rehab place in 2 weeks. Another $100k for the rehab place, and then, a month later, to home.
She'll need at least 2 months of CNA in-home care, and she has no income now to pay for that.

Guessing she'll hit a million dollars in medical and home care cost in two or three years.
Florida liabilty coverage in most policies caps at $250,000. Then you sue the driver directly, a VERY long and money-burning exercise.
Mr. Carter lives in a 1958 rundown 2-bedroom rental in a seedy part of St. Pete.(I used to live IN St. Pete, so I know)

Danielle will have NO income for months and months, so there will be only1 income trying to cover the bills that 2 salaries WERE paying before-  feed 7 people, pay the mortgage and 2 car payments plus ongoing in-home care. No health insurance, no disabilty coming....

People who love her are remodeling the house, widening doorways for wheelchair, lowering counters and cabinets, putting bars in the bathrooms, ramps into the house and some at stepdowns in the house.

She is my hero and has been for a long time. I am so proud and amazed by her every day !

Loving, empathetic, compassionate, incredible zeal for life- that's Danielle.

All the funds we receive from GoFundMe will be going to cover her lost income for a handful of months, plus satisfy medical bills with Lee Health, the hospital chain here in SW Fla.(remember, it means Sweltering Weather)

On day 2 of her stay, Lee Health placed a $63,000 lien on Dani's home. On day 10 of her stay, they increased that at the County Clerk to $156,000 lien.
I am positive she'll owe them $300,000 by the time she goes home. THEN she'll have to pay in cash for a CNA to come to the house 30-40 hours a week.

Won't you help her and her family with a generous donation??
