“We’d like to start by saying it’s very sobering for us to be writing the second GoFundMe in two years for our family. In 2021 as many of you may remember we lost our dad to Covid complications. We’ve been grieving, healing, and coping with that reality since and today, again, we’re asking for help.
Just over a month ago, Daniel was diagnosed with Cirrhosis of the liver. Cirrhosis is a life-threatening liver disease that affects all other organs in your body and presents complications with your blood, brain, and nutrition. In many cases, it’s possible to stop the progression of the disease, but most often the damage is irreversible.
Because of the malnutrition that accompanies liver disease, Daniel has lost over 55 lbs in the last 2 months. And because of his liver’s inability to filter toxins from the body, it has taken a heavy toll on his mental status affecting his ability to work.
Over the next 6 months we will be watching to see if Daniel’s liver starts to recover any parts of its function. The next couple of months will determine if he needs to be put on a waiting list for a liver transplant.
Because Daniel has been self-employed for some time, he is also uninsured. This has been the most difficult part of the last 2 months. The best care we had hoped for won’t take appointments from self-pay patients. He doesn’t meet qualifications for extended enrollment. The private options won’t accept pre-existing conditions.
We find ourselves stuck in a gap between now and when we can get him onto insurance in January of 2024. Many Cirrhosis patients require multiple hospitalizations to help manage the complications that come with the diagnosis as we’ve experienced already.
What causes Liver Cirrhosis? In most chronic cases as is the case with Daniel, chronic liver disease is caused by the continual overconsumption of alcohol. We want to as a family be very open and transparent about this. Over the last 2 years, Daniel had been heavily coping with the loss of our dad in early 2021 and then divorce later that same year with alcohol. Sometimes we change because we have to, because of a bad diagnosis. And sometimes we change because we want to. Daniel has expressed to us that he has wanted to for some time, but was battling a feeling of hopelessness.
As a family, Helpless and Hopeless are not words we’re willing to come into agreement with, especially when we have a community of close friends and relationships who have been continually reaching out asking how they can help. We keep going back to the Bible in the book of John where Jesus told his disciples he was sending an advocate, a comforter, a Helper. And we keep hearing the words, “I’m sending help.” That’s what we keep hearing over and over again. That’s why we’re naming this GoFundMe “I’m Sending Help”.
Would you join our family in believing God for the miracle He is doing in Daniel’s body? Would you pray for peace over our home as we’re helping care for him? And if you feel led, would you consider giving to help us in the journey over these next 6 months?
There are still some things we don’t know yet about his diagnosis, but here’s what we do know. God is irrationally generous. And although our circumstances change, He doesn’t change.
Thank you for sending help.”
