Dear dog owners across the world,
My name is Burak ERKİL. I'm a 35 years old artist. I am based in Berlin/Germany for a couple of years. I have grown up in İstanbul /Turkey.
I am here for a new dog-related illustration book project: DOGmatologies. And I'm looking forward to your participation.
I graduated from Bauhaus University, Weimar, Public Art & New Artistic Strategies MFA Program in 2017 with a project called ''I AM SORRY, I AM A DOG''. I wrote my thesis about the deportation/mass-killing of Istanbul's stray dogs in 1910 by the late Ottoman Empire on the Island called Oxia.
For the first time in my life, drawing became a part of my creative process.
For the artistic episode of my thesis, I made an illustration book dedicated to the 80.000 anonymous dogs who lost their lives on the Island.
I photographed 80 different stray dogs, mostly in Istanbul, and gave them a voice by drawing them.
The book ended up in the Motto Distribution, Berlin, and can still be purchased online (link under):
The second illustration project, 'DOGmatologies' is now in preparation and waiting for its participants.
From the holy scriptures to current internet memes, our very human culture is undeniably full of canine (dog) content.
Our stories are evolutionarily inseparable, yet at the same time, they differ profoundly. We define each other constantly as two different species.
But then, between these interspecies differences, some magic happens and our shared stories emerge.
This time I want to portray dogs universally across the globe. With the dogs expressing their point of view with the help of their human companions.
Their stories. Their truth. Their DOGmatologies.
I want to reach as many diverse participants/stories throughout this journey as possible.
If I can collaborate with 500 dog owners and hear 500 different voices, that will be a dream come true.
Once you decide to participate in this project, I need a few things from you:
-Please make the most starlet photo of your four-legged friend and share it with me. ([email redacted]) I'm looking forward to having the most jaw-dropping and significant moment(s) of your companion. In high resolution.
-I like to read a short story about your dog. (Their exact breed, age, where they come from, etc.) Basically the short story of their life. In digital format.
-Formulating the storyline of the book I ask every dog-owner the same question: ''Your dog is entering the world stage. The whole world is watching. What you think your dog would say to the world?''
The content of this message can take its form through any medium you can imagine. It can be either a long or short written message. It can be a humorous, political, academic, poetic, religious, a deeply personal manifestation, or the opposite attractions of all these notions, as long as it's addressed to the whole world.
Then I want you to write this message in your (freestyle) handwriting and send it to me via email. (High-resolution photo or digital scan.)
The book will be designed, printed, and published when we reach out to enough participants and of course when I'm done with the drawings.
Also, an exposition with the final illustrations will be following the publication.
At the moment the participation is possible with free donations. (But more is more and every penny will be spent for the sake of the project.)
Every participant with their dog(s) will receive a copy of the book.
If a participant wants to purchase the original illustration of their dog(s) the price will be 100 Euros.
Also, people who have no dog companions are still very welcome to support the project financially.
Thank you so much for reading and also for the support I have been getting so far.
