DIETRICH, The 2nd "In Concert" Preview

Our first staged reading of DIETRICH was received with acclaim that went far beyond what David and I dared to hope for. People were on their feet applauding, cheering, and even stomping in enthusiastic support of the work in progress presented at that night’s preview.

Take a look at this brief TRAILER and see for yourself.

So many things have changed since then. We’re all acting like COVID might really, this time for sure, be over; Russia has invaded Ukraine in a manner that feels reminiscent of Hitler’s invasion of Poland. Our country is more divided than ever.

Yet one thing has not changed…

...our culture needs leaders and people of integrity.

That’s why David Goodman and I continue to develop DIETRICH, the Broadway-styled musical about the noble life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer.

Now, more than ever, people need to be reminded of what it means to be moral, to be inspired to be generous, to be loving, and even to lay down your life for your friends. That’s what Dietrich Bonhoeffer did. He stood up against the greatest evil of the 20th century and paid for that stance with his life.

 Since then:

• We’ve completed ACT I.
• We’ve composed 13 new musical segments, six of which are new, complete songs, others include recitatives, underscores, incidental and dance music.
• We are closing in on completing ACT II.

• A second staged “in concert” reading is set for Friday evening, August 12, 7:30 PM at CBU’s Wallace Theatre.

• Two final projects that endeavor to make the musical complete are slated for 2023.  The first would be the creation of an “Original Album Musical” audio recording with a full orchestra. Then, after the testing and refinement of the above presentations, CBU is planning a completely staged production with costumes and choreography for the fall of '23.

Your generous gift will provide honorariums for the cast, chorus, and orchestra for the August 12th "in concert, reader's theatre" presentation, most of whom will be students, recent alumni, and faculty of California Baptist University. Production costs for an audio and video recording are also included. Like "Les Mis," "Phantom" and "Evita," musical utilizes a large, symphonic orchestra with a cast and chorus of 20 singers.

The Story:

This musical describes how a precocious, fun-loving son of a privileged upper-crust family, without regard for his own personal safety, took a lonely stance against Hitler. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was one of the few who dared speak when Hitler had effectively silenced all opposition. Mobilizing the persuasive power of “Broadway” style productions, this musical will portray Bonhoeffer's life and message, an example that has never been more relevant than it is today.

Some highlights:

Awakened by the captivating hope and music of a Harlem Baptist church Dietrich gains a fresh understanding of the God-given equality of all people whether black, white, Christian, Jew, or disabled.

Returning to Germany, young Bonhoeffer soon becomes a leader in the fight to save Jews, Slavs, and those physically and mentally challenged—all now being characterized as an infectious degradation of Hitler’s Aryan ideal of German supremacy that must be systematically eliminated.

While working heroically to persuade Germany’s politicians, intelligentsia and clergy, he takes his appeal to the leaders of the international religious community pleading for all to stand against the Nazi menace.

In a last, desperate attempt to end the mounting atrocities, he joins with some of Germany’s leading military as well as his own family members in a conspiracy to assassinate Hitler.

After finally finding love and becoming engaged to be married to the fascinating and beautiful Maria von Wedemeyer, the Gestapo quickly  uncovers Bonhoeffer's involvement in the conspiracy and he is imprisoned for the next two years.

While not yet 40 years of age and just days before the Allies liberated Germany, Bonhoeffer was executed. Yet his many letters and writings from his jail cell have become an inspiration to the world.
