The Story:
These 5th grade boys diligently worked after school all year to designed a creative and unique solution from scratch to compete with other students from around the state in the North Carolina Destination Imagination competition. When they announced the first place winners, the boys were over the moon with well deserved pride.
Their journey to first place was one filled with obstacles that required problem solving and perseverance. Who knew that all of these skills would be put to use in such a real way on the day of the competition? A few days before the competition, one of the five team members dropped out. On the day of the competition another teammate ended up very ill and he had to return home for medical care. With just a couple hours to work with, the remaining 3 boys banded together, rewrote the script, adjusted their roles, and a mere minutes before they were to compete, succeeded in overcoming this hurdle that would make the best of us struggle.
Additionally , this team not only brought home the gold but also was awarded the North Carolina Destination Imagination Spirit Award!!! The Spirit Award is given to the team that demonstrated creative problem solving to overcome a hurdle with a positive attitude. When they announced the award and what these boys had overcome to not only compete but WIN, the auditorium spontaneously gave a standing ovation!!!
The impact that this seemingly simple fun after school club has already had on these 5th grade boys is life changing. The competition, the awards, all of the fanfare has been received with humbleness and pure joy that we can only describe as exemplary. North Carolina could not have picked a better bunch of kids to attend and compete on the Destination Imagination GLOBAL stage.
