Cypress' Marine Conservation
Donation protected
Hello my friends!
As many of you may know I am currently attending the University of Victoria, in the Marine Biology program they offer here. My entire life I have loved the outdoors, animals and the ocean, so after graduation I decided to pursue an education that would allow me to help protect the things I love.
I am now in my third year of university (holy time flies!) and since moving to the coast I have already become involved in many things that bring me closer to my dream. I have participated in a dune restoration project in Tofino; I was selected to take part of a Marine Conservation Workshop held by the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS); and I've done numerous trips to Bamfield Marine Science Center.
A few months ago a friend of mine from home sent me an email concerning an amazing volunteer experience that took place in the Caribbean!! Out of the island of Carriacou the organization Caribbean Reef Buddy focuses their time on marine conservation. With help of locals and volunteers they are able to help protect and restore the surrounding reefs. Considering this is exactly what I hope to do after graduating university I became very interested, and yesterday I signed up for the program (and was accepted!).
My volunteer experience will take place next summer from July 31, 2016 to August 27, 2016. During my time I will help with the containment of the invasive Lionfish, work on the coral nursery, and participate in reef monitoring.
The payment I need to pay the organization is $3388.00, plus a $370.00 application fee (that I have already submitted). Included in the costs I will also receive my PADI Advanced Open Water certification, receive underwater photography training and have my hospitality covered. However, I will have to also pay for my flight/transportation, travel insurance, and some food. Although my campaign says I am only looking for $3000, I will need a lot more to make this exciting opportunity possible!
I do not need to pay the $3388.00 until May 2016, which means I will be saving and fundraising until then! I will be so thankful for any help at all! And I promise to keep my entire experience documented so everyone can see what I was able to accomplish.
Please visit the Caribbean Reef Buddy website at caribbeanreefbuddy.org and/or contact me with any inquiries!! And THANK YOU once again!!
