I am fulfilling a 20-year dream by enrolling in the educational policy doctoral program at Stanford University. I am loving my classes and professors, engaging in interesting research projects, and making wonderful new friends.
But I have been struggling financially from the beginning. Although generous by graduate school standards, my fellowship is not sufficient to meet my housing, medical and personal needs. I have a part-time job that helps me pay for groceries and incidentals. However, it is an hourly job, and I only get paid when I work. I've been sick for the last few weeks, so my pay has been less than I need.
I am working on finding less expensive housing for the long term. In the meantime, I need to be able to pay for my rent, doctor bills and complementary medical treatments, such as acupuncture, that have helped me to live well despite my autoimmune condition for the last 15 years. I also would like to visit my family back east, who I haven't seen since Thanksgiving.
When I had the means, I was generous with those who had need. I hope and pray that my friends and family back home can be just as giving during my time of need.
Rent: $7,200 (or $1,800/month)
Medical: $2,000
Travel to visit family: $800
TOTAL: $10,000
Rent is due in early March, and I currently am incurring medical expenses. The trip home would be in April. The sooner you can contribute, the better.
I have thought about setting up this campaign for many months, because I believed my people would be able to support me. But it is really hard, and takes a lot of humility, to admit that you are at your whits end and need assistance. Thank you in advance for considering my request--and an extra thanks to all who are able to give.
