By Accident!!! That is how I always answer the question...."How did you get into this business?" It all started on a winter night 20 years ago. I received a phone call at about 2am from a friend of mine who had lost control of his car and end up in a ditch on the side of the highway. He asked if I could lend him some money because the tow truck driver wouldn't accept his credit card. I agreed and so I got dressed, went over to the bank machine and drove over to the scene. The roads were brightly lit from the snowfall in the early evening and the driving conditions were a bit slick. I parked at a distance, left my car running and put my hazard lights on as I watched the car get ‘winched.’ The tow truck driver advised me that I’d be a lot safer in my car..... He was wrong!!!
I went back to my car and sat in it and list to the radio as I watched the car being extracted. While doing so, I was paying close attention to the number of cars that were coming down the ramp. Each car sped up and signaled and merged onto the highway. This one particular car kept speeding down the ramp and when I realized it wasn’t stopping, all I could do was hold on to the sides of my seat and brace myself.
On impact everything from my front – went to the back and everything from the bank came forward. I remember actually seeing myself sitting in the car above myself and seeing my family flash in front of me and then returning back to my body. As I came to, I clearly remember saying 'I can't believe he hit my car, he actually hit my car!! The car that I just bought and paid for from my savings. I opened the door, stood up and my legs felt like jelly underneath me. I passed out momentarily and awoke sitting in the ambulance.
The driver was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. In terms of any claim or payouts it was one of my worst experiences with an insurance company as we both had the same insurance. After a couple months of painful rehabilitation, physiotherapy and the insurance company saying there was 'nothing' wrong with me, I decided that I wanted to go back to school and study for a career I could retire doing. I had a friend who was a pastor and I went to him seeking some help. He said that he was going to do a temperament test on me that would help me determine where my strengths would be in terms of taking courses or finding a career path. When I took the test it came back nurse, social worker or funeral director. I laughed because when I was in elementary school taking a similar test it also said funeral director!! A career as a funeral director at 12 was not cool!!
Convinced that I was divinely appointed, I decided to
apply to the Funeral Service Education program and was told by a few people that no one gets in on the first try. A few months later I received my acceptance letter, went back to school as a single mother of two sons aged 10 and 6 at the time and later graduated with an award for Proficiency In School While Raising A Family.
For the past 18 years, I’ve worked for large corporate and independent funeral establishments with the same passion and zeal as when I started.
So now it comes full circle, I got into this business helping a friend and now I have dedicated my life to helping 'friends'.
I am truly blessed to be able to serve and help thousands of families’ transition through the loss of a loved one. It is not only and honor, but a true privilege to care for someone when they have died. When you really think about it, it is actually the last thing on earth that anyone can do for you!
Now, humbly, I am asking for your help in helping me start up my own funeral home. Where I will continue to serve you and your loved ones while honoring your traditions during such a sensitive time.
All donations, will be put towards the purchasing of property, renovations, equipment, permits and vehicles.
Thanking you in advance,
May You Be Blessed Beyond Measure!!
