My name is Yurel. I'm a proud Jamaican American, living in New York City. I'm writing this because my family was severely impacted by the recent Hurricane Melissa. These family members include my father whom some of you may have met when I first became a patient at Trude Weishaupt Dialysis Center, as well as additional family members in other parishes throughout Jamaica. I have many relatives whose homes and livelihoods were devastated in the parish of Manchester. My father's home was quite damaged in the parish of St. Mary. Damage to his roof and foundation to his house. His house is at the top of a hill, so any damage to the foundation could eventually lead to a mudslide if there is another rainstorm and possible tropical storm/hurricane.
Because of my chronic kidney disease and me being on disability, I'm limited in the help that I can personally provide. I'm doing everything I can, but there's so much more that needs to be done.
We are thankful that no lives were lost within our family, but many friends and neighbors died because of Hurricane Melissa. While we continue to provide support and care within our communities, our family also needs help. Our goal is to fix the damage to our homes and even rebuild some homes that were completely wiped out. It's imperative that we make these repairs before the next hurricane season. We are thankful for life, but now it's time to rebuild stronger than ever. The Jamaican motto is "Out of Many One People." This holds more weight than ever. It's time to unite and act as one.
