Clippers for the Smithers
In mid-December 2019, our mate, Hayden Smith, suddenly had a large lump appear on his sternum. He felt healthy and physically fine but the GP in Esperance, WA was concerned and directed Hayden to have an MRI. The scan identified the lump to be cancer and just before Christmas, Hayden was diagnosed with a form of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
This type of Lymphoma has a good cure rate but treatment still requires Hayden to undergo 4-6 months of intensive chemotherapy. Hayden and his partner, Emily, have left their home and jobs to receive this treatment in Perth. Hayden, geographically isolated from his friends and family, is proud and lucky to have Emily as his primary support and carer.
The Leukaemia Foundation has been very supportive for Hayden and Emily and have provided them with accommodation during his treatment. This incredible organisation helps thousands of Aussies from regional and remote areas by providing a range of support for cancer patients and their families.
Though there are significant support systems in place to help cancer patients, there is still a huge financial burden on both them and their families. Flights, transport and accommodation for family and friends in support are expensive. The every-day costs for Hayden and Emily do not disappear and become a bit more stressful when they have not been working for a prolonged period of time.
In order to help, we, a few of Hayden's mates, are getting together to raise a bit of cash and show our support by shaving our hair and revealing some potentially rude looking heads underneath. The intention is to give Hayden and Emily a small gift to alleviate a bit of the financial stress that comes with leukaemia. Hayden has given us strict orders that not all the money will go to him and we are to make a significant portion to the Leukaemia Foundation in order to help future Aussies just like him.
So please donate and help out a friend in need and a great cause.
If you'd like to shave or dye your hair (or anything else weird and wonderful to your body or hair) please get in contact via this page.
For transparency, at the end of this fundraiser the donations will be withdrawn by Clarke Goebel to his bank account. From there 50% will be donated directly via bank transfer to the Leukaemia Foundation and the other half will be transferred to Hayden Smith via bank transfer. Clarke Goebel is his friend since beginning high school in 2005 and is also one of the organisers of the fundraiser.
Cheers,
Hayden's Mates
