March 18, 2015 Update:
Again, thank you to all of Chris's supporters and those who have donated. We are pleased to announce that Chris has been able to stand on her own and although still wobbly and unsteady with her balance, she is walking! Praise God! We were not sure that she would be able to walk again, but she is one determined little girl who refused to stay confined to a wheel chair.
This past Monday, she started rehab therapy, and they have assessed that she will keep improving and should fully recover.
This virus that she had has been the strangest illness. For about 3 weeks it caused her to revert back to being a baby in so many ways. It is like we have watched her develop again. Thank God it isn't taking 5 years for her to reach her status before she became ill.
Please don't stop praying for Chris. The doctors want to watch her closely to ensure that she continues to improve and so that she doesn't have a relapse.
Again, we are so very grateful for all of the prayers, support and donations. God Bless You!
Update: On March 5, 2015 Chris was discharged from the Children's hospital and is now home. She is still unable to walk or stand on her own. She will have to get into rehabilitation therapy as soon as possible to work on regaining her balance and hopefullt be able to walk again.
Chris's parents will have to meet an insurance deductible of $4,000 before insurance will start paying towards her rehab. In addition to having to pay all of her beginning treatments and rehab therapy there are other medical expenses such as wheel chair rental, doctor visits, and any medications needed.
All funds raised on this site will be transferred into her father's medical savings account and will be used solely for Chris's doctor appointments and rehab. The account is not used for anything other than medical care.
Many people are also choosing to make offline donations to help the family during this difficult time. Please visit Chris's website for links to contact the family if you would like to make an offline donation. www.caringforchris.com. Initial story
We are the grandparents of a beautiful 5 year old girl, named, Chris Ti'Anna Collins. She just turned 5 on January 29th. Until Wednesday, February 18, 2015, Chris was a very vibrant, active, and happy little girl. On that day she began to loose the use of her legs, and kept falling down. She kept saying, "my legs won't work."
Later that night she began to vomit, and very quickly got worse from there. The next day, she could not walk and was very lethargic. Her mother took her to the emergency room. They did a cat scan which showed some swelling on her brain. They immediately put her and her mom into an ambulance and sent them to Children's Hospital of Atlanta.
Shortly after she arrived, a spinal tap was done. There was no indication of Meningitis. They watched the spinal fluid for four days and no bacteria cultivated.
Some doctors think she has viral meningitis, and some do not think that is what it is. However, they do believe that she has some kind of virus that has attacked her motor skills.
Since she became ill on February 18, 2015, Chris has not been able to keep any food down at all. Everything she puts in her stomach comes back. Her digestive system has shut down. They now have her on a feeding tube, which at this time seems to be helping her get her strength back.
But, still she is not able to sit up, stand, or walk on her own. She has no balance, her equilibrium has been severely effected by this illness. She has also lost bladder control and her bowels are not working on their own.
She is now being moved to the rehab floor in the hospital so that they can work to teach her how to walk again, if possible. In addition, she is having to relearn hand-eye coordination.
The medical bills are escalating quickly, and their family's living expenses and regular bills are being severely effected. At this time, it is unknown how much longer Chris will be hositalized, or what the outcome may be. We have started this online campaign to raise funds to help with Chris's upcoming and ongoing medical expenses. In addition, outside donations are being made to help her family, financially, since both parents are out of work (for an unknown length of time) to be with her 24/7. Chris has two brothers who are at their home with a family friend and neighbor. The entire family is suffering.
In addition to any donation that you are able to make to this family, prayers are requested and appreciated.
Please visit Chris's website at www.caringforchris.com for more information, updates and photos. Also, please feel free to sign her guest book while you are there. On that site there are links to other sources and email links to contact the family if you prefer to help offline.
Thank you in advance for your willingness to help,
David and Theresa Collins, Fraternal Grandparents of Chris.
Chris is the 5 year old daughter of Jason and Elizabeth Collins. Her brother's are Beau and Joshua Collins.
