Charly Lowry's Kidney Hero Fund

Charly Lowry, the lead singer of Dark Water Rising, is in need of a kidney transplant. While we are actively looking for a kidney donor, we are fundraising to offset the cost a living donor may need to remove themselves from work for a 4-6week recovery time. This is our call to action: if you are not in a position to donate a kidney, please help provide financial assistance to someone who can.

Charly's kidney function is diminishing due to a rare auto-immune disorder called IGA Nephropathy. In 2009, Charly found herself in imminent threat, needing dialysis. Waiting on the donor list for a kidney, she was struck by some terrible news; her cousin, Ronald Deeringwater, had succumbed to a fatal stroke. With the quick decision of his immediate family, knowing she needed a kidney, she was on the mend, as were 4 other people, also recipients of his organs.

Due to the nature of this degenerative disorder, her numbers place her again in a critical position, currently with <5% kidney function. Currently, Charly travels to a local clinic, 3 days a week and 4 hours at a time, to receive hemodialysis. She is on the donor's list, but there is no way of knowing when her name will rise to the top of that list. We are reaching out to our community to find a living donor and every donation, how big or how small, we believe can make a difference in expediting Charly's road to recovery.

What we are asking of the community is to alleviate any financial burden from "Charly's Angel" - the living donor we are searching for. Insurance covers the cost of the donor's surgery. We aim to raise $15,000 dollars to offset any time the donor will take from work, from their family, and their day to day lives. With the financial stressors of taking 4-6 weeks off, we are hoping the success of this campaign will bring a donor forward and offset any doubt maybe holding them back, through your donations.

Of strong will and mind, Charly stays socially and politically active with her powerful voice, both on and off stage. You may have seen her on tour with Dark Water Rising, carrying the story of her Lumbee/Tuscorora history and traditions with her to each city. You may have seen Charly with members of the group, Ulali Project, marching on Washington in protest of the North Dakota Access Pipeline and the mistreatment of native people. Young women can look to her and see a powerful woman in music and a woman engaged with her native roots. And she isn't going down without a fight.

That being said, we are actively searching for a living donor. Charly's Blood Type is A+ which means she can accept a kidney from a donor with Blood Type A+, A-, O+, or O-. If you or someone you know fits this criteria and is interested in becoming a live donor, please contact the Living Donor Coordinator of UNC Hospital at (984)-974-7568 for a brief phone interview. They will help find out if you are a good candidate and assist in the donation.

Our goal is $15,000. We hope that will help a donor come forward, offsetting any of their financial stress. We hope this campaign will get shared to as many eyes as possible and are asking you, our community, to help in any way you can. We hope that it helps musician, activist, and leader Charly Lowry find a donor. Thank you.

P.S. If you are not a registered organ donor, we reccomend you to register at your local DMV! Ronald Deeringwater's decision to register saved 4 lives, including Charly's.
