UPDATE: Charcoal spent 4 days in intensive care and fought bravely to survive. On 1/21/21, Charcoal passed away. Please click on "updates" to read more about what happened. Currently, we are still raising money to cover the enormous vet bills and we are trying to find funds to pay for a lawyer as well. Many thanks to everyone who has donated - lets continue to spread awareness and keep the momentum going. We are so thankful for all your help!
Puppy: Charcoal is a black mini-poodle puppy. He is energetic, loving, and playful. He just turned one year old on the day that he was attacked. He recently completed obedience training school and had his whole life ahead. Now, he is fighting for his life in critical condition.
Incident Location and Time: 74-17 Grand Ave, Queens, NY 11378 in front of a Pet Supplies Plus, around 3pm, January 18, 2021.
The Incident: We parked in the parking lot, heading out towards Pet Supplies Plus. As we were about to walk into the store, two pit bulls came up behind us - (one was dark brown and one was dark ash gray). They went to sniff Charcoal and as Charcoal was backing up, the ash gray dog bit him in the chest/stomach area and would not let go. We tried to pull him off but couldn't. Pedestrians nearby saw what was going on and came to help get him to release his hold on Charcoal. It took 4 passerby’s to release his hold. The owner was not on site, these two dogs were running free, no leash attached to them.
We rushed Charcoal to the vet across the street (Maspeth Animal Hospital). They evaluated his situation and suggested we rush him to Blue Pearl in Forest Hills because they cannot give him the urgent care he needed.
Pet Supplies Plus was able to capture and hold the dogs in their grooming room. They closed off the grooming section and waited for the police to come. Police from the 104 PCT came and took down the report.
The diagnosis at Blue Pearl states that he had a puncture wound in his chest area, some blunt punctures around his abdominal area and a fractured rib. They ran tests and x-rays and found some air around his lung and heart that causes him to have breathing problems. They were able to remove some of the air and he still requires breathing assistance since 11:39PM. His blood test showed below normal results and required a plasma transfusion.
Unfortunately, overnight, Charcoal’s condition worsened and there was fluid build up in his abdomen and stomach. At this moment, Charcoal is in critical condition and will most likely not survive*. The next 24 hours is crucial and we are keeping our hopes up. Charcoal is a fighter and we hope he will pull through with all the love and care he is receiving.
Fundraising: From the moment of the attack, Charcoal was rushed to the vet for emergency care. He had multiple tests, X-rays, MRIs, and a transfusion performed. He had to remain overnight for observation and continue intensive care through the next day and a second night of around the clock observations. We are fundraising money to cover the vet bills for this traumatic experience.
