A Cause for a Koz: Kozzy’s Emergency Medical Fundraiser
On July 1st, Kozmotis was startled and fell 15 feet off of the back deck of my parent’s house where we have been staying since school was canceled due to COVID-19. Under normal circumstances he would have been fine, but somehow in his fall, he propelled himself into the window and caught his face on the exterior stucco ledge which caused damage to his lips, as well as a more serious injury. He broke his upper right canine tooth, exposing the root. He is on a mild pain medication and is doing better now. Unfortunately, to keep him healthy and prevent inevitable life-threatening infection inside the exposed root he will need extensive and expensive dental work, including a feline root canal and twice yearly x-rays under full anesthesia. Pet insurance would typically cover an injury such as this and I am kicking myself right now forthinking my student emergency savings would be enough. I had planned to buy pet insurance after I graduated from UNC School of the Arts this year and secured a stable job. Unfortunately, it is too late for that. I don't yet know the full expenses, I am still waiting for a referral appointment from the vet to a specialist. Although, the rough estimate for his treatment given to me by his vet far exceeds all my set-aside emergency savings, and this does not include future x-rays.
When I received this news I was crushed and horrified. I felt totally helpless. Thankfully, I am an artist, and after some grief, I buckled down to think of ways I could use the skills I have to help pay for these unexpected expenses. I have designed this T-shirt, and will be offering handmade cloth face-masks. I am also holding a reduced-price art sale of several of my art pieces. For a bit of background:
I have long struggled with anxiety and depression, which is the reason I originally got Kozzy. I was hoping to find an animal I could bond with and take with me to places to help me. Unfortunately, I am allergic to both cats and dogs and didn’t know if this would be possible. About two years ago, I discovered that Siberian cats were considered to be hypoallergenic, thus Kozzy came into my life. I got my first ever summer internship and saved up until I could afford him. Since then he has provided me so much help and added so much joy in my day-to-day life. I trained him as a young kitten to walk harnessed on a leash as well as being able to travel in a backpack and stay friendly and calm in crowded situations. He's been many places most would say a cat could not go, and has even been face-to-face with leashed dogs without spooking. He is incredibly friendly, brave, and loves attention and adventure. He easily wins the hearts of cat and dog lovers alike. I have yet to meet another animal who is more loving and loyal and who manages to inspire others the way Kozzy does.
