Kidney Transplant for Carolyn

Donation protected
"Be patient. Sometimes you have to go through the worst to get the best." – unknown

PURPOSE – To raise money for a kidney transplant for our sister, Carolyn.

DIAGNOSIS – In 2007, Carolyn was diagnosed with IgA Nephropathy, a Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) after failing a medical examination as part of an application for life insurance. Currently, she is at Stage 5 CKD, which is the end stage of renal failure. Since there is no cure for Kidney Disease, she only has two options: (1) lifetime dialysis, or (2) receive a kidney transplant. Carolyn’s ultimate goal is to have a better quality of life by receiving a kidney transplant from a live donor.

DIALYSIS – Now with her kidney function at 6%, the dialysis procedure is to begin any day now. Dialysis is needed 3x/week, which in turn, will result in Carolyn missing work during these treatment days. The co-payment (alone) is $25/visit, which is $75/week and totals to $300/month (not including prescription for the numbing agent needed). Carolyn’s medical insurance through her employer is not sufficient for the type of treatment that is needed. As for her husband, Joseph, his employer does not provide medical insurance; therefore, the couple were left with no choice but to purchase private insurance for approximately $1,000/month.

TRANSPLANT – The estimated cost for a transplant is up to $300,000. Carolyn’s insurance only covers a portion of her pre and post operative procedures, however, she is to pay 10% of the total cost. Furthermore, post transplant, Carolyn will need 3 months to fully recover, meaning there will be lost wages. In addition, she will need to be on several medications that are crucial to her health and survival. She must take anti-infection and most importantly, anti-rejection medications for the rest of her life or the life of the new kidney. These medications may range from $2,000-$6,000/month.

GOAL – Talk about bittersweet! Although we are thankful that there are at least options with this disease, we are hoping for the latter, and that Carolyn may live a dialysis-free life and undergo a live donor kidney transplant. Treatment with a transplant tends to offer a better quality of life verses long term (lifetime) treatment with dialysis.

HOW YOU CAN HELP– Those who know Carolyn, know that she has always been a fighter. All her life, she had to prove to everyone that she was capable of achieving her goals without the help of others. Independence was her strong suit and because of this, she never felt the need to ask for help. Unfortunately today, Carolyn is unable to fight this disease independently and is now in need of our help. We are not only asking for your love, prayers, and support during these trying times, but we are also kindly asking for any financial assistance that may help alleviate with all future expenses that are expected with this disease and treatment.

Carolyn is a wonderful mother of two and happily married to her husband of 15 years. She is the foundation of her family and there is no chance her family can survive or do this on their own. Again, this is where your help would be greatly appreciated. Our family and I would be forever grateful for the generous donors who choose to give our sister a second chance for a better life. Carolyn’s journey is far from being over but like always, she is a true fighter who is about to face the "FIGHT OF HER LIFE!" We continue to pray and hope that she will come out of this a SURVIVOR!

With that being said, her gloves are on!
