Capital Area REACH has for more than a decade been working to teach DC area young adults their own great worth through programs that teach them to give back to their communities.
Since its creation in 2005, REACH has helped more than 400 at-risk young people through educational assistance, scholarships, mentor-ships and community assistance programs run by the students themselves.
CAMP AJ
Camp AJ is a week long, free soccer camp that is held in honor of REACH participant Alhaji “AJ” Hassann . AJ was helped by REACH and became an important participant in helping to reach out to others in need. AJ was very passionate about soccer. He attended T.C Williams High School in Alexandria, VA, and later continued his soccer career at West Virginia University. It was at WVU where in 2012 AJ passed as a result of an unfortunate violent incident.
In honor of his memory, REACH inaugurated Camp AJ Soccer Camp in July of 2013 in Alexandria, Va. The camp was an instant success that drew approximately 90 campers from at-risk backgrounds in the D.C, Northern Virginia and Maryland metropolitan area.
· Camp AJ provides free soccer lessons conducted by experienced college and high school players, students and volunteers
· The camp also conducts character development sessions in which children learn valuable lessons emphasized by the REACH program, including respect for others, energy, positive attitude, humility, and sportsmanship.
· The soccer enrichment courses teach the rules & history of the game, health & nutrition, and game-planning.
Since its inception, Camp AJ has moved beyond Alexandria to two additional locations. Camp AJ - Arkansas was established in Russ Sullivan’s hometown of Little Rock, AK in 2014 where it has grown from 60 participants in 2014 to 110 participants daily in 2015. Camp AJs most recent expansion is Madison, VA where a REACH student took the initiative to bring the camp to his own hometown. In the camp’s first year at Madison, attendance averaged more than100 campers per day. The Camp AJ Program is on track to continue its expansion as new locations are being scouted for 2017.
