Today we as a family reach out to you to do something very uncomfortable and unnatural to us. We are asking for your help.
Two weeks ago Caitlin (my 30 yr old sister), found a lump in her breast. After being tested, it was determined that she has she has a serious form of cancer called -aggressive ductal carcinoma. The tumor is large and is growing at a fast pace.
Many tests have been administered and more have been scheduled to determine a stage and exact course of treatment. What we do know so far is she will require a mastectomy (probably a double), chemotherapy, and quite possibly radiation as well. The doctors are recommending these treatments ASAP due to the degree her cancer has spread so far.
Fortunately, Caitlin has a good job, is insured, and has an amazing husband by her side (Kyle Wolf). She has shifted her life goals around from a career & travel oriented mindset to beating this terrifying form of aggressive breast cancer. To make matters worse, Caitlin also has Malaria, a disease she contracted years ago when she went on a missions trip to Tanzania, Africa. As you can imagine, this adds another layer to her treatment and recovery.
Caitlin works at USF Health which has been a Godsend! Her colleagues have helped with expediting appointments at Moffit cancer Center (important because of the rapid cancer growth).
Caitlin & Kyle are not the types to ever put their hands out. After discussing these issues with others who have tons of experience in this realm, we have determined that GoFundMe is a must.
You would not believe the expenses that creep in when something like this occurs:
- IVF - So having children can be a part of the plan. (Very pricey $15,000 - $25000)
- After a certain period, she will have to pay to keep her benefits (health insurance).
- After a certain period, she will lose her pay from work
- & many other unforeseen expenses.
Please know that your donation will not be taken lightly. I will do my best to keep you updated on where your money goes and Caitlins status. If at the end of this, there is still money left over, it will be donated to a charity that helps others with cancer and to a party to celebrate her survival! Of course, you are invited!
Thank you all in advance for your love and support as we take on our biggest challenge to date as a family.
