UPDATE: There will be a Part 2 and possibly continue into a short series.
My name is Jon Mathews. I am an independent documentary filmmaker based on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
In January 2022, I began working on Oregon Inlet, a series of brief documentaries that tell the story of the seven-decade effort by the village of Wanchese, NC to pressure the U.S. Department of the Interior and National Park Service into keeping the inlet navigable. Wanchese is a historic fishing community whose continued existence relies on boats being able to enter and exit its harbor safely. Frequent dredging and buoy maintenance are currently required, but what is urgently needed is the construction of a dual jetty on the south and north side of the inlet. Since the 1940s, Wanchese has been petitioning officials for the construction of the jetties but with no success. In the meantime, channel maintenance has been an ongoing battle—a struggle that the series attempts to capture and relay to a broader audience. Oregon Inlet has received close to 340,000 views on YouTube aloneand according to local fishermen, has been highly effective in pressuring state officials into better maintaining the passageway.
My current project, Wind and Sea, is a series of short and timely videos documenting the threat of utility-scale offshore wind developments along the eastern seaboard, from North Carolina to Maine.
Each video will be filmed, edited, and released in real time. The first segment, which is almost completed, includes interviews and footage captured during recent visits to southern New England and New Jersey. The second will concentrate on the Rhode Island and Massachusetts wind lease areas and the affected local communities, with an emphasis on Vineyard Wind and Revolution Wind. To gather material for this segment, I am organizing a ten-day filming trip to RI and MA that kicks off on May 7th. Included in my itinerary will be the documentation of the Coastal Resources Management Council hearing regarding Revolution Wind on May 9th. Another stop will be the offshore wind protest rally scheduled for May 13th in Portsmouth, RI. Plans also include traveling to Nantucket to document public sentiment regarding Vineyard Wind; scoping out export cable laying and substation locations; connecting with commercial, charter, and recreational fishers; checking out the North Atlantic whale activity off Cape Cod; meeting with marine biologists; and pursuing any unanticipated opportunities that present themselves along the way.
Driven by my passion for preserving the ocean, I am 100% committed to Wind and Sea and strongly believe in its potential to have a transformative effect on public opinion. Funding for the project is solely reliant on my GoFundMe site—please consider donating so that we can make this happen!
