Education for Girls in Ghana

Help us raise $7,500 to make education possible for 150 girls in Ghana!

Who are we?

The Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED) fights poverty and inequality by educating girls. Once they complete school, the CAMFED Alumnae network (CAMA) empowers young women to step up as leaders and activists in their communities. CAMA recently surpassed 120,000 members across Ghana, Tanzania, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Zambia - representing a powerful new force for change across sub-Saharan Africa. The network is active in the Builsa North district of Ghana, where this project is based.

What do we do?

United by our background of rural poverty, CAMA members empathize with the significant challenges faced by vulnerable children in rural communities. Additionally, having been supported through school ourselves, CAMA members have a strong motivation and commitment to reinvest in our communities. Since its inception, CAMA members have directly supported more than 784,000 children through our own philanthropic efforts.

The mission of this project is to support girls to stay in school and succeed in Builsa North, Ghana.

Our Project

Achieving the goal of this GoFundMe campaign will enable Camfed Alumnae (CAMA) members in the Builsa North District in the Northern Region of Ghana to support 150 of the most vulnerable adolescent girls in the district to access education by meeting the school-going costs that are preventing them from going to and staying in school. Coming from impoverished backgrounds in the same rural communities ourselves, CAMA members have a unique understanding of what it’s like to struggle to get the resources and materials needed to get an education.

While primary and secondary school are technically free in Ghana for all children, other direct costs of education remain, such as uniforms, notebooks, and required parental contributions. These costs are prohibitive for many families, and the project will specifically seek to support those who are out of school and those who live in the most remote, hard-to-reach areas.

Your donation will be used to buy items for the most marginalized adolescent girls. CAMA will identify the students and then provide them with tailored material support, based on their individual needs, allowing the flexibility to make the biggest impact. The most vulnerable children are often invisible to formal structures, so by selecting them, CAMA members aim to connect them to additional sources of support.

How are the funds going to be used?

Funding of $7,500 will be used to support 150 of the most underprivileged girls in the district to access education by covering the costs that are preventing them from going to or staying in school.

CAMA members will tailor the packages of support based on the need of each individual girl, but these may include the following, with a total unit cost per girl supported of approximately $50:

Sanitary pads - $3
School bag - $10
Shoes - $12
Notebooks - $3
School uniform - $12
School levies (for parent contributions, and other costs) - $10

CAMA members are using funds from generous donors around the world like you, and their own resources to purchase items and meet the immediate needs that are preventing children from fulfilling their potential through education. So your gift will be multiplied by young educated women in Ghana to send even more girls to school!

How can you help?

Each and every donation is truly appreciated, and will help create a better future for girls in Ghana today!
